I have a semi weather related requirement...after a google and extensive net searching, I can't seem to find a NZ supplier of a wireless thermometer/temp sensor. What I want to do is put the sensor part in the canopy of my ute and have the display in the cab...the reason, I have two German Shepherds and I need to check on temperature back there. Do any of you have any sources for such an item? I don't want to use a cabled version, as getting the cable back there could be a time consuming mission!!
Any advice much appreciated!

There are IR red dot laser-type temp sensors. You just point them in the direction of the object or area you wish to measure.
Your idea is a good one Gary, but I prefer a small LCD (and backlit if possible) display in the cab that is constantly on, rather than turning around and firing the gun towards the dogs....

I'll try "Googling" them and see what happens....
I also see DSE has one for about 30 bucks with a 3m wire....can the wire be extended without causing a distorting of temperature readings?

This is a bit late as a reply, but there are some problems with what has been said so far.
First increasing the length of the cable wil not always work well at all due to the small change in capacitance as the lenght of cable increases. This is from experience in trying to do so and failing, and looking at the waveforms generated on an oscilloscope.
The only units that will allow extention of the cable almost without limit are displays that interface to Thermocouples. INTEC has them in stock.
I have found some wireless temperature sensors, not sold in NZ, but none that would suit this application.
DAVIS does have wireless temperature sensing units but only as a add on to the Vantage Pro 2.

Wireless sensors are standard with most types of home weather stations nowadays. If you're unwilling to purchase an entire station then unfortunately I have no further suggestions to make.
If you do decide to purchase a station, make sure you shop around. There are many breeds available, a few of them overpriced. If you're prepared to spend a reasonable amount of cash there are some excellent research-grade models around.
I now use components from Vaisala (http://www.vaisala.com), Campbell Scientific (http://www.campbellsci.com/weather-eto-stations), and Weather-Pro (http://www.weather-pro.com)...certainly not the cheapest units, but for my purposes I need MODBUS protocol compatibility, and in any case they're only a little more expensive than some brands of home weather stations, while being vastly superior in construction, accuracy and reliability.

Possibly you could look outside the square............How about a wireless baby monitor that tells the temperature?

I bought a wireless temperature and RH unit from Radio Shack when I was in the States last year. Very nice. The unit will take up to 4 or 5 remote sensors. The main unit was about US$60 if I recall and the remote sensors about US$40 or so. You may like to take a look at their web site and purchase from them.

After some further searching I have found a unit available locally from http://www.scottech.net the price is $114 ex GST. It is a three channel unit made by Pronamic (seems to be sold as Oregon Sc in the States) which has a two line display and is sold complete with one remote unit. It uses 144MHz radio which is touted as working over 100ft. It also can sound alarms from limits set.
The unit just mentioned above sounds like a good one.
Gary, the RadioShack one I have has a catalogues number 63-1030 as does the remote sensor. The main unit can handle 3 remote channels and the indoor one for both temp (and max & min) and RH (and max and min).
If you do a ggogle search for RadioShack and go to their web site and do search for thermometer, you will get a number of these listed.

Hmm 144MHz! I wonder if that's legal in NZ? Be aware, maximum fines for operating ilegal equipment in NZ is $100,000.00 for an individual, $250,000.00 for a company per offence. there is a lot of important equipment around that frequency (read stuff used in emergencies). Ask the supplier for written confirmation it's legal in NZ if in any doubt, then he wears the fine and you are ok for showing due diligence
