I may just head to Bluff. Although 40mm/Hour does look tantalizing for Fiordland. I've been in that before its certainly wet!
Thanks I'll leave at 06:00 in the morning.

Hello Joe

Its not just the south of the country that is supposed to wear it. According to the severe weather warning a large part of the country is supposed to get affected some way or another.

Besides, it was such warm sticky patch we went through down here in December a few ratty days won't bother me, though I do hope nobody suffers any damage IF the winds do eventuate. ( Just checked barometer and it's dropping rather quickly)

Take care
Cheers

Strong Blustery NE winds this morning of about 40kmh have just eased up so looks like NW winds are not farr away now. 8)
I see it's gusting 122kmh at South West Cape already and thats just the NW not the damaging SW later.
22C at 9am here lots of upper level high cloud which certainly has that blown out efftect to it showing how strong the winds are at certain levels.
Cheers
Jason.

that south port station recorded a gust to 68kts (125kmh)
but the wind has eased a bit from the intial blast with the wind change
inland in gore, it was only 38 kmh....much less
38 knots at oban, stewart island
http://obanweather.flatout.co.nz/obanweather.html

with that pressure drop, its amazing not more wind....i guess there is still a lag in the wind field developing
if we had a pressure drop like here we would be getting 60 knots!

That's not a gust but a sustained 10-minute wind speed average!! :D  (Hurricane force with a beaufort of 12!)
However the NW'er seems to be it's biggest wind down there

Gusting to 103km/h in Invercargill i see

Wind and showers havn't arrived yet here.. Looks like we're under a pretty strong inversion going by the radar recently

Baro dropped to 979hPa but is on the way up again now. A little breezy, top windspeed only 35.8 Knots an hour ago, so nothing too fierce.

Power been out here for the last 40 minutes I think due to a crash or a tree come down somewhere.
W wind gusting 50-60kmh here at the moment id say could get stronger about midday when isobars fully tighten up here.
Area of most interest today will be of course coastal southland and south Otago Id say Dunedin City might see a SW change up to 120kmh and not exposed places correct me if iam wrong considering it's meant to be 130kmh in exposed places.
Cheers

I'd say you're right. Looks like the southern coast is in for it. Inland Otago is quite sheltered so we're only getting a light taste, although Met Service claim it could get worse later in the day. We'll see I guess.

Now may be a good time to explore the solar and wind turbine options Jason, especially now that the word is that the government is finally going to subsidise residential solar installations (about bloody time...)!

When the power cuts do hit, I find it kind of amusing to have all the power I need up here on my remote mountaintop, while below me the lights in Omarama and Twizel are out! :D ;)

The NZ Herald reported 180km/h gust at Mid Dome, although they don't say how that was measured.

West or northwest gusting to gale at times out near Akaroa, with lulls (just fresh winds) in between. Got up to about 30C late morning. Did get 6mm rain last night, but the ground dried very quickly this morning!

Some heavy gusts overnight here but nothing exceptional as far as I could tell. A stimulating change from the run of pleasantly boring days that preceded it. Report of 45.1C yesterday at Sydney Airport - can't be strictly compared with the 45.3 recorded elsewhere in the city in 1939 (records not taken at the airport then) but it's likely the airport would have topped that reading had the station been open at the time.
