Perth's Weather

Unread post by nzmaninsydney »

Perth is also getting more South-Westerlies than normal as well as having more cloudier days.

The highest maximum so far is 27.2 degrees and this was recorded on the 2nd of December.

Since then the maximum temperature has not exceeded 24 degrees from the 3rd to now, this is totally unheard of for Perth!!

The lowest minimum so far has been 10 degrees recorded on the night of the 10th.

Its a big difference when the daily maximum average is 31 degrees and the daily minimum is 17 degrees. To date the daily maximum is 22.3 degrees and dialy minimum is 13.5 degrees.

By now they should have recorded 209.6 hours of sunshine, to date only 141.3 hours of sunshine has been recorded.

Have seen on the weather maps, that there's been more south-westerlies than usual along the western and southern coast-lines of Australia.

the maps show low pressure over mid aust and the large highs sit off the coast for weeks and no troughs to push them under

I'm sure Perth will recover soon, you can't have the records mediocre for long in a place that has averaged about 3200 hrs sun annually over the last 8 years or so.

This is set to continue, will be a cool summer for Geraldton-Perth alright.
SST anomalies from Port Hedland in the NW right around to Adelaide in the central south are below normal, especially off Perth. This of course will weaken that WA through, which gives Perth the very hot weather during easterlies. Water temps are well above average west of Fiordland, while the Tasman remains largely warm.

Looks like a blocked weather pattern affecting Australasia - persistent humid northeasterlies over NZ, while cold southwesterlies plague southwestern WA. Their unusually cold December so far reminds me of NZ's wintry December last year, except the low altitudes and latitudes of WA prevents the extremities that NZ can get in an unseasonable airflow, eg the snow and frosts that we got this time last year.
Just shows how relative the weather and climate is - NZ visitors to Perth probably wouldn't notice the cold nearly as much as the locals do.

No signs of the wet season in North Queensland either, apart from the odd localised thunderstorm.Endless days of 32-34 temps, and dewpoints around 22-24.
Did manage to capture one storm on video,25mm in a 9 minute burst........wonderful. 8)

Cheers.

Looking around some other Australian sites so far this month:

Sydney & ACT - warmer, drier and sunnier than average
Brisbane - wet first few days, sunnier
Adelaide - near-normal temps, a bit more rainfall

Offshore: Norfolk Is - virtually rainless, very sunny
MacQuarie Is - only 28hrs sun in 18 days, 1/2 of that in one day!

(their Dec average is about 109. Even cloudier Campbell Is has had totals as low as 40s for both Dec. and Jan.)

Rechecked a few on BOM - Sydney temps well above Dec avg, rainfall low, sunshine way up. Perth still getting cooler days by their standards but no NZ location would be anywhere near their sun for this Dec. My inlaws staying on the Gold Coast will have been well toasted for the last week or so.

Sydney summary for Dec 2005 is out - notable for exceptional warmth, low humidities, dry, and also the sunniest month ever recorded there - again showing the wide range of conditions it can experience.
