Auckland weather

...is quite boring I know, but there must be a tad of instability about today, i even saw some castellanus out to my west just before.

Anyway it may lead to an afternoon sea breeze convergence similar to what we got last nite which resulted in a drop of rain yesterday evening.

10am radar shows a convergence line over the waitakeres but it appears that any T/Cu are getting quickly flattened so I imagine the upper must be fairly warm??

still thought it may be worth a post....but i see there will be no significant rain for auckland until week starting the 27th at the earliest. I can feel a short lived drought coming on!!

already a drought here, LOL
only 8mm recorded in february,and only 11m so far this month!
there is a weak through in the middle of the high at the moment....
possibility of isolated showers, but the inversion layer is stopping their developement.....

Yes, some shallow instability today and with dewpoints around 16C and light winds there must be a chance of one or two small showers when the seabreezes get going.

In Munich, Germany the weahter is just as boring as at Auckland at this time.

Dull this morning in Chch, with a period of unforecast drizzle, but cloud's thinning out this afternoon. (though sun still isn't breaking through yet)

I had forgotten what a good couple of days we had, and for my birthday

Temperature was a lot higher than forecast today with NW, managed to just hit 27 here..
Looks like some potential instability around the north next Tues/Wed in between the ridges

Coolish at the rugby game last night also few large spits at the start of the game but otherwise a good game had by all. 6/6 now for cantabs

Went for a hike up Mt Grey (near Amberley) today - gusty northeasterly along the coast died out inland, and a northwesterly gradually freshened in the afternoon as we cam down. High cloud (beginnings of northwest arch) kept the temperature at a pleasant level on the mountain.

BTW, my cousin in Amberley showed me a photo dated 9th March 2006, which showed a fresh coating of snow on the 970m Mt Grey, with the snowline down to about 650-700m.

Pretty low for so early - I remember a cold southerly then, but I didn't think the snow would get lower than about 1000m. Tony, did you see that snowfall?

How was the Track there Tich? I was there about October last year triming the track and putting new markers in this of course done for DOC.
I must admit its great to see you dont have to travel farr to see native bush

which is what we need to do more of get rid of all those introduced pine trees and replace them with natives.
There was a time when the Plains were covered in natives but the maori's decided they needed wood and land for farming so they burnt it down.

No, I can't find any forum comments on this. When I found the main thread relating to the cold weather of that day, you only mentioned that 0.4mm fell at your place Tony, and I put a link to the Mt Hutt webcam which showed fresh snow on that mountain. (at levels alot higher than Mt Grey)
The snow could've been hail, but hail coatings are usually more uneven and not restricted to being above well defined altitudes, whereas the white coating on Mt Grey was only down to a specific level.

We found the track OK, but I can't say whether it's improved or not, as I've never been up there before. Alot of the time we used the official 'road' (to the summit tower). Some nice native bush in places, with much birdsong

, but also a large number of wasps, obviously living off the honeydew from the beech trunks.

I certainly remember that cold outbreak (though not as vividly as the southerly gales of a week before), and knew there was snow on the Alps, but didn't think it would come so low in North Canterbury. Must've been a extra pool of cold air to bring freezing levels down in the area.

Can any one remember if Metservice put out a snow to low levels forecast for this day?? Because I dont think they did.

I'm pretty sure they didn't. I believe the only snow forecasts for that cold spell were in the mountain forecasts, ie at levels higher than about 1000m. Snow down to 700m in North Canterbury in early March must be rather unusual. (though if it had happened during the southerly storm nearly a week before, it would've been somewhat more believable)

Reading the thread, I was surprised to see that the Gebbies Pass wind turbine was broken "again"

Ok. sorry, I misread Ben's post and thought the photo he had was referring to the cold snap on 10th March 2005. Reading it again I see its this year.

So, back to the beginning... Simple answer: no, I didnt see that snow, it must have melted very quickly.
