It was a fun trip with some lightning seen. Not too much in the end but atleast we've come back from the coast with seeing "some" lightning.
Here's some different versions. I've posted a full frame deinterlaced and also another but just made it a half frame to blend the interlace line things. I can't remember how it works but it works!
I'll post a small clip of the stirke soon.
Edit: Here's the clip. 186 kb 3 seconds long with sound! I know I had to be a dumb ass and point out the obvious that "it's a cg!". But it sounds funny anyway
Cheers

Interseting to read on Metservice the risk of Tornadoes tomorow in the North Island.

Interseting to read on Metservice the risk of Tornadoes tomorow in the North Island.
Valid to: 12:00 am 10 Apr 2006 NZST
Issued at: 11:42 am 8 Apr 2006 NZST
The disturbance mentioned in the overnight period will make its way up over the rest of the central and western parts of the North Island during the afternoon and evening. It may in fact move through as two separate wind shift lines. The situation looks to be very unstable with conditions favouring hail up to 20mm and wind gusts near strong cells to 110km/hr (or more). Conditions are also favourable for weak tornadoes with some of these thunderstorms, especially in the vicinity of these wind shift lines. This area of instability also includes western parts of the lower North Island. It could be that when this situation is reviewed tomorrow morning, a severe thunderstorm threat may have to be considered.
Over Northland, conditions appear less unstable.
The heavy showers and scattered thunderstorms will continue on the South Island west coast, but these should start to ease from later in the afternoon over southern Westland and Fiordland.
To finish, there is also a low risk of a few afternoon or evening thunderstorms developing along the Canterbury and Otago coasts, but this appears to be an outside chance at this stage.

I can't believe how cold the NNW wind has felt today. I recorded a high of 17.8 and it was nice when the sun was out but when the cloud moved in mid afternoon brrrr. Complete contrast to last weekend.Gary Roberts wrote:I can believe that. It may well be around the same level here.NZstorm wrote:Freezing level at Invercargill today is 1500m. It felt like the cold NNW in winter coming down over snow covered mountains. Thanks for the explanation TonyTTonyT wrote:Its not a warm northerly flow though, that low has been sitting mid tasman for several days now, and with a very strong SW flow on its western flank its dragged a lot of cold air up and into the Tasman Sea. The airflow over NZ is now quite cold, even though the wind direction is from the NW.

Nothing on Trevor McGavins site, or I read it incorrectly.Weather Watcher wrote:A few thunderstorms in Lower Hutt this evening with some brief heavy rain....

He has the only weather site in lower Hutt that I'm aware off.
Some of his lightning strike recording could be electric EMU units as they arc when passing under crossed overheads

When in Otira in the days of the "Trams" some excellent arc-ing occured especially in frosty weather or when the overhead had not been in use for a couple of days.
