SW Gales soon to start with cold showers

The freezing gales are almost ready to blow with horizontal rain in Auckland only 12c here today not much better than July :(

Similar temperature in Chch this morning with a gusty southerly. (recently sprung up in the last hour) The big difference is that it's fine and sunny here.

Looks like the North Island is in for a bout of stormy weather today, with thunder and hail likely, plus snow to about 1100 metres (the level of the Chateau) in the centre of the island. Sounds wintry, but we had even colder outbreaks in November last year (and in November 2000), so it's not that unusual for the time of year.
