Metservice is now forecasting snow down to 900m in Southern Lakes area, but it obviously got lower than that, enough to close the Lindis Pass. 3C with recent precip at Tara Hills at 6am, so this isn't surprising.

Might be some on the top of Castle Hill Peak but that would be 1800+m which is closer to the forecast freezing level.

The new Tekapo webcam is at about 1000m and there's snow as far as you can see down the hillside :)

I was estimating 500m. But the ridge in the southern oceans came to the rescue of the SI and cut off the cold air supply and the subtropical airmass has won out.

5cm on the Lindis (yep, it's closed), and sleet falling from Burke Pass to Simons Hill (just north of Lake Pukaki). The highway between Oamaru and Palmerston is closed because of surface flooding, and SH83 between Omarama and Oamaru is borderline.

Say, maybe autumn has finally arrived... ;) :D

Yes, these pics suck, but I've always freely acknowledged being the World's Worst Photographer, so I make no apologies to you guys who know how to use a camera properly!

To 0900, 27mm at Omarama, 24mm at Lake Ohau, and your guess is as good as mine at Twizel (I was supposed to toss out the braindead Davis station and install the new Vaisala today, but called in crook instead...heh...)

3.6° at Lake Ohau right now, but a balmy 6.5° in tropical Omarama.

On the Lake Ohau and Omarama pages you can use the 'Extremes' link ( http://www.observatory.org.nz/weather/o ... ndex1.html & http://www.observatory.org.nz/weather/l ... ndex1.html )

Unfortunately the current Twizel station doesn't work properly, and won't play nice with HTML, so don't even waste your time with that.

The road at Moeraki (where the 'famous' spherical boulders are to be found, between Oamaru and Dunedin) is to stay closed for between three and eight days due to sever surface flooding and slips. The Lindis Pass has just reopened though.

Good photo's, I grew up in Mosgiel and never saw the Silver stream that high.

The biggest threat for flooding down on the Taieri comes from the Taieri River but it usually takes a day or two for the water to come down from the back country.

Impressive - looks bad, but I'm pretty sure that there would be a few events in the 1950s and earlier that matched it. I suspect the benchmark event for that century was the floods in May 1923, affecting many places in the east from N Canty southwards.

I think this flood could be a bit different to earlier floods in that heaviest rainfall totals were near the coast. The totals I have seen suggest a record deluge for some parts.

Tks for the link to those pics Foggy.

Lakes Pukaki and Tekapo are up 1 meter so far. Not enough rain in the catchment, mostly snow, but 1 meter is better than none.

On Coast FM this morn the Waikato power lines have been mothballed and Auckland has to find alternative plans closer.....perhaps with all the winter rain we could get our own hydro lakes
