Next coupla days up this way...
I'm surprised that no one has made mention of the awesome waterspout that was in central auckland at 4.35pm last night.
The footage on TV1 looked like it was by the chelsea sugar factory (how sweet is that?!) and apparently is stopped traffic on the harbour bridge!
sweet!...anyway some good looking Cb's around this morning with the potential for some T/S action till the end of the week. its a bit dejavu (sp?) really from last week.
oops ! my bad, i see there was a mention of the waterspout on another thread. Did anyone here see it?

i only saw the last part of the waterapout footage on TV unfortunatley, but it looked realy good!
i was in the city yesterday afternoon, and then in Clarkes beach about the time it occured and could see a big black bse cloud and nice punching white towering cumulus tops!!
it seems that its in the stage just before glaciation of the anvil head, with the maximum updraughts, that waterspouts occur

yes i've noticed that too, most landspouts or water spouts and funnels that people see do seem to come from congestus or T/Cu rather than glaciated Cb....just me observation really!Manukau heads observer wrote:it seems that its in the stage just before glaciation of the anvil head, with the maximum updraughts, that waterspouts occur
i remember the funnel that we had in aucks last feb that occured over the waitaks one hot afternoon from a convectively active convergence zone came from a T/cu rather than a Cb. I think you may be on the right track with regards to maximum updraughts etc etc.

yea...I saw the most impressive CB's I've seen all year, while travelling to uni on the bus through Avondale. They looked like separate nuclear bombs going off with a lot of congestus build up around the base. With the sun shining on them showing the shadows and everything, it was great
.....I love not having my camera when I need it!
lol Anyway, there were lots of people on the bus and they were beginning to think I was weird looking around out of the windows all the time, lol

If you don't like it you can always move somewhere else. Otherwise get over it and live with it!Michael wrote:What I cant understand, its not thunder or lightning, or not fine as 99.5% of the population likes,What do people like about misted windows, leaves all over the place, dark in peak traffic, cold driving rain and long wet mushy lawns stuck inside shivering seeing grey murk for weeks and weeks on end ?

Not surprised. Been running up Mt Eden for luch. Huge CB's coming across from Manakau Heads and sliding accross south Auckland. No sign of lightning but wouldn't be surprised....looks to be clearing accross the rest of town thoughC-Nimbus wrote:Small hail storm out west apparently

Thundery Cb's now clearing the western fringes from Taranaki to Kaipara.
From my view they seem to be losing it as they make landfall.. whereas otherdays they would've fired up further.
Thunder risks subsiding tomorrow, but hail chances increasing during the afternoon with those freezing levels dropping to around 1600m.
Westerlies rising tomorrow with gusts to 80km/h
