Another quiet tornado season! The only tornadoes I am aware of in Tornao Alley this May were in Oklahoma in early May, and they were F0.
So a bust for tornadoes but atleast not a bust for severe thunderstorms.

Lack of tornadoes this spring has been caused by a persistent upper ridge over the central southern USA which hasn't budged. The more typical pattern in spring is a mobile upper flow with upper troughs/jet streams. Need the stronger veering upper wind profiles to get the mesocyclonic supercells/tornadoes.

Enjoying the sun in New Mexico though still getting some high based storms here in the afternoons.

How much would participation in a group going storm chasing be likely to cost? Is it in the thousands or tens of thousands?

5-6000 in my books, but NZstorm would give us a clearlier idea!! The only downside that i have had looking into a chase is that im only 21 and to hire a car there if your under 25, blows your budget right out!!

Oh to only be 25 again! Not since the 80's I'm afraid.

I'm going to be thinking quite hard about this. I really would like to do something like this but wouldn't be able to afford a proper tour and lack the knowledge to do it on my own.

Joining a group like this could be the answer and at least I'm old enough to hire the car at a cheap rate. Must get hail insurance! I'd imagine you mustn't tell them you are going storm chasing as they may not let you hire the car.

In Sante Fe, elevation 1950m, 6400feet. Its a cool morning here with a chilly 11C but forecast for here today is 34C. Saw a thunderstorm here yesterday (high based with dps -3C) to keep the trend of a storm everyday we've been in the US intact. :D

Moving east today to Abilene Texas.

great to be back, shame we did not bad a tornado...I guess will just have to go back one day!

edit

Yes, ice on the windcreen of the car this morning here in Grey Lynn!

There was an upswing last year in June in the severe weather activity in the states, possibly see that again this year. I see a report of 425" hail in Nebraska today.

Those Waikato storms will never be the same again, just dont compare with the MidWest Storms. :(

Thanks Brian for your contribution to the trip. It was mostly your and NZstorms skills that got us into the right spot each day. I reckon we saw a lot more action than most other chasers out there during the two weeks.

Below, a photo of a dust Devil near Dallas yesterday. Saw plenty of these with the hot dry weather.

These are common on windy summer days down in the Mackenzie too, and probably Central also. Since the farmers began plowing most of the basin for dairy conversions I've seen dozens of these, particularly this past summer. One near the Lake Ohau road was of small tornado proportions and stopped traffic.
