Easter Weather

Unread post by NZstorm »

Looks like a fine easter on the way for Auckland. Or am I being optimistic.
Looks very much like an east/west weather pattern. Low cloud and drizzly
rain in the east, fine in the west but for isolated showers.

Saw a couple of nice buildups today - a very good looking system to the north (suspect this one was over Dargaville)

Image

And another that passed over and gave 2.5mm ... as it headed south, it matured a bit more and I guess the folks south would have got a heck of a lot more rain from it.

Better sized images http://www.powerlink.co.nz/~graeme/pict ... ril19.html

Hope there will be some more action tomorrow, tempted to go for a drive north!

Greame,
The second cb photographed I observed developing from Auckland.
I drove out on the NW motorway to intercept but it seemed to move quickly into the Waitakeres. There was some very nice congestus in it at times. Took photos but I don't have a digital camera as yet.

Did you take alook at the midday sounding. Only marginal instabilty.
K index 24, Lifted index +1.1. But hail was reported from Northland.
I guess the quite warm temperatures today were enough to trigger the
convection.

Tomorrow could be another unstable day but the ridge is edging closer.
Cb's more likely in the far north than Auckland as a result i think.
Have to wait and see though.

Cheers

Graeme,
Good shots and good to see results from an enthusiastic storm weather observer on this forum.
A pool of cold air went into the Tasman from the middle of last week.
This with the lingering shallow trough up to the west of the NI, some Cb development was likely especially today and possibly tomorrow.
North Taranaki might get a flash or 2
Aaron, I think Pete is off line at the moment as someone nicked his weather gear.
Lovely fine autuminal weather in the SI today except for ChCh and other eastern areas.

Hmmm could be a good day, the midnight Whenuapai (dang 6 hours ago) had a LI of -1.8 (Aussie BOM), and the K is 29 according to my spreadsheet.

I'll wait to see what develops today...could be worth a drive up north.

From last nights sounding LI +1.5, KI 29.

I expect daytime heating to result in a negative LI.

But have to wait and see what develops. A couple of cb's around now.
We had a heavy shower here in Grey Lynn around 8am. Rainfall last 24hrs 19mm.

Cheers

There is a slow moving band heavy rain/thunderstorms across the Coromandal ranges at the moment. Last 12hours over 200mm has been recorded at the Pinnacles and 125mm at Golden Cross. On the Coast,
Whitianga had recorded 28mm in the 6hours to 6am. Don't know what they have redorded since. Met Service have a heavy rainfall warning out on this area.

There are a couple of places:

http://www.metvuw.com/upperair/ (skew-t)

http://www.metservice.co.nz/observation ... r_data.asp (TTAA etc raw)

And http://www.bom.gov.au/products/reg/IDS65024/ .... you will need a user and password for this site, initially uoi will need to get it from http://www.weatherzone.com.au/misc/links.jsp - click on the link called "BoM Upper Air soundings" and take note of the user and password given in the popup before continuing.

I'm sure there are many others on the net out there!

Cheers,

Unfortunately overcaste here since 11am with persistent showery rain, heavy at times. I have recorded 43mm last 3 hours. I notice Massey reporting station 6km to the west of here has not recorded any rain in this time and is reporting air temperature of 21.7C, DP 18.4C.

Lifted index at midday today was minus 1.1

Hmmm yes, really nice weather here...I'm about 20km north west of Massey.

Looking south:

Image

It's continued to build, one cell is dominant at the moment. Lots of reports on the scanner of flooding in houses in Mt Albert, Blockhouse Bay, New Lynn areas.

To the north it almost looks like a front approaching, quite dark from the north west round to the north east...recon we will get something within a few hours.

23mm here since 9am
its blue skies out to the west of us, been like that all day
so its a slow moving system......easterlies at the surface, jetstream NW higher up...

the rain radar shows extremely heavy rain over the waipoa forest area to hokianga area, which is only slowly moving south....

these weak lows to the west of northland and NE winds like this, being cradled by a high to the south, have given areas of very heavy rain in the past before.....its not unusual, happened before...but a night mare to predict who will actualy get rain and who wont the day before....me reckons
coromendal dont have much rain at the moment, typical after the rain warning was issued after the rain....i would had to be a forecaster.....but another new rain line is building in the hauraki gulf again....

oh and keep up the good work graeme
its really neat to see what these cb's look like from afar!
thats a weird witchs hat it has on!

unitec massey site now has some rain":
http://weather.unitecnology.ac.nz/weather/rain.html

thats a big jump....maybe there was something wrong with the rain gauge?

this site shows not much rain, also at massey
http://www.rob-hall.esurf.co.nz/our_weather.htm

so it looks like massey has all of a sudden had a downpour then

Thanks for the photo Graeme. I managed to photograph some nice cb's this morning before the persistent rain came. I recorded 49mm betweem 11am and 2.30pm when precip eased. Most of the rainfall came in a few very heavy bursts. Weather has refused to clear here, broken stratus with adjacent cb. I suspect there is a convergence zone at work here.

4.20pm heavy rain has started again.

Interestingly, there was very little rain here while Massey got that deluge.
The rainfall highlight at Massey was 31mm in 1hour.
