I'd watch out for TV3, Jim Hickey could come out from his cafe to haunt Toni MarshAndrew Massie wrote:Yeah.. sometimes I wonder if anyone up North has heard of the SOUTHERN ALPS and the CANTERBURY NORWESTER and the NORWEST ARCH etc.. Last count for successful canterbury thunderstorm prediction was 4/14 November2005-Now. Toni Marsh vs Mother Nature... No competition!

Clearing slowly out although still the odd shower about going by 9pm radar.
Once again I will be going for the same as few weeks ago possibly few snow showers in the morning with it being cold enough but we will see.
2C outside now still dropping southerly breeze.
Cheers
Jason.

Quite possibly, with temps in Chch only just above freezing around dawn, and some light precipitation, though I only saw a liquid, drizzly shower about 8.30am. But I notice there's a light dusting on the Port Hills down to about 200m.Once again I will be going for the same as few weeks ago possibly few snow showers in the morning with it being cold enough but we will see.

There was ice that looked like snow on the temporary roof (black polythene) outside our windows here at work near the airport this morning but on closer inspection, it looked more like hail.Steven Graham wrote:I notice there's some snow in the grass and a few mm on cars here in Templeton, so it got down to 40m overnight

I guess what happened was that the rain band came and delivered the wet stuff to Canterbury on Tuesday morning and then moved off to the north before the very cold air arrived that night. (which brought snow to low levels, but only light falls) If the coldest air had arrived earlier, before the rain had moved on, then we'd have got heavy snow to low levels. That must've been what was originally predicted. It looked really good on the GFS model runs at the weekend but by last night the forecast thickness had increased and by today it was up at 530dm

I work on the theory of the barometer.tich wrote:I guess what happened was that the rain band came and delivered the wet stuff to Canterbury on Tuesday morning and then moved off to the north before the very cold air arrived that night. I think that the barometer was too high on the surface for anything major to happen

Going on what I said before about Hanmer apparently it did snow off and on there today.
Which doesn't surprise me either as it was 2C maximum there today.
Not sure what elevation Hanmer is at id say about 400m.
But anyway tomorrow looks set to be a repeat of today or should I say today considering the time
.
Then roll on the relativly mild few days after that with NW winds until Sunday when it packs again.
Cheers
