A period of gales for some parts of NZ 8-9 July
Looks like it is going to be a bit windy over many parts of southern and central NZ
SEVERE WESTERLY GALES EXPECTED IN SOME EASTERN NORTH ISLAND AREAS,
ALSO SOUTHLAND, SOUTH OTAGO AND THE OTAGO PENINSULA
MetService is expecting a deep low to move rapidly eastwards to the south of the
South Island during today (Saturday).
This low could produce a period of severe gale force westerlies during Saturday
afternoon and evening about coastal parts of Southland and south Otago, and
about the Otago Peninsula.
Over the North Island, a period of severe westerly gales is expected overnight
Saturday to Sunday in eastern areas from Havelock North to Eketahuna.
These winds have the potential to cause damage to trees, lift roofing iron, and
be a hazard to driving, especially for motorcycles and high sided vehicles.
About the Southland coast in particular, they could also bring down
power lines.
MORE DETAILED INFORMATION FOR EMERGENCY MANAGERS AND TECHNICAL USERS FOLLOWS:
STRONG WIND WARNING
AREA/S AFFECTED: COASTAL PARTS OF SOUTHLAND AND SOUTH OTAGO, THE OTAGO PENINSULA,
ALSO EASTERN AREAS FROM HAVELOCK NORTH TO EKETAHUNA
FORECAST:
COASTAL PARTS OF SOUTHLAND AND SOUTH OTAGO
Between about 1pm and 9pm Saturday, west to southwest winds could
reach 75 km/h at times, with gusts 120 km/h.
THE OTAGO PENINSULA
Between about 3pm and midnight Saturday, southwest winds could reach
65 km/h at times in exposed places, with gusts 110 km/h.
EASTERN PARTS OF THE NORTH ISLAND FROM HAVELOCK NORTH TO EKETAHUNA
Westerlies should gradually pick up during Saturday afternoon. In the
12 hours from 6pm Saturday to 6am Sunday, winds could reach 60 km/h
at times in exposed places, with gusts 120 km/h.

Well said foggy. We all know where to go for forecasts....Foggy Hamilton wrote:Worst of the wind is over squid. Just the usual now for Southland.. strong W and a bit of a puff around central NZ.
It's also quite annoying to post all these MS warnings when we are all quite capable of accessing it ourselves.

During Tuesday, a front crossing the Tasman Sea should strengthen the northwest flow over the country. By the end of Tuesday and into Wednesday, gale northwesterlies are likely in exposed places of Canterbury, Otago and Southland, and there is low confidence that severe gales will be experienced near Cook Strait.
more gales on tuesday and wednesday aswell as the current gales.

Missed it
Was inside a pub in town watching the rugby. Recorded a strong gust here about 7.20pm. Talked to my sister this morning and she was still fetching clothes out of the neighbours trees etc
. She lives at Taieri Mouth, south of Dunedin on the coast and she said it was pretty scary at times.

There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.
