Wintry weekend in the South.
I see that Fencepost is suggesting snow to sea level this coming weekend.

A disturbed southwest flow is expected to cover New Zealand for most of the outlook period.
On Saturday, a front followed by very cold air is expected to spread northwards over the country. Snow will probably lower to sea level over the southern South Island, with a risk of heavy falls above 200 metres or so in Southland, south Otago, and the Otago Peninsula.
Snow showers are likely to fall to low levels in the east of both islands, the south of the South Island, and the central plateau. Some heavy snowfalls are possible Saturday to Sunday about Banks Peninsula, and higher parts of the central plateau.
The ranges of Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay could also receive some heavy falls, but the risk here is much lower.
On Monday, a ridge should spread onto the country. (metservice)

I noticed MS now has SNOWFLAKES for you there, FlutterbyeFlutterbye wrote:Brrr - a 10.9° frost this morning and I recorded a low of -4.6°

(Models have been pretty consistent and looking like it is gonna be a VERY cold weekend...perhaps I can "assemble the un-assembled snowmen from heaven" with my daughter again?

Hi
Good morning all. New member here so please bear with me. I am a complete weather novice but am very interested in it especially the snow.
Freezing here in Chch and just wondering if we will get any snow this weekend. Any good sites anyone can recommend please? Thanks

As I've said before - I'll believe it when I see it.gllitz wrote:I noticed MS now has SNOWFLAKES for you there, FlutterbyeFlutterbye wrote:Brrr - a 10.9° frost this morning and I recorded a low of -4.6°Not to mention many other places on the S. Island...I wonder when they will change over the icons to snow flakes for the rest of us...

Looks more like a south/southwesterly outbreak, rather than the wet cyclonic southerlies we've been getting lately. So more likely to be wintry showers with sleet, snow and hail, rather than persistent rain or snow. (so the waterlogged areas hopefully shouldn't get much more preciptation) Still could easily be heavy snow showers in exposed areas, esp the southeast of the South Island.
