The Desert Road was Interesting today. In behind Mount Ruapehu at the Summit of the road it basked in intermittant sunshine! At times there was snow blowing in from the West. Waiouru had much heavier snowfalls and no sun on the couple of visits I made.
In any case it snowed heavily either side of the summit.
I haven't encountered snow from the West like that before.
Some hail showers here also in Somerfield from 7pm.
Some glaciated cloud above.
A bit of wind from the south but nothing much.
Anyway here a a few photographs.

I remember a guy who had a holiday place near Ohakune who I'm sure said that most of the "useful" snow for skiers on Ruapehu came from westerly-quadrant events, not southerly ones - but the memory may be hazy. He also talked of a cloud formation known as the "Rangataua pet" or something like that.
They are some real nice pics from John and co. awsome. and yes we did get a few interesting cloud formations today very interesting but never mind. Had a few hail showers here and there in the last couple of hours since 8 pm to present.
Heavy rain and sleet here heard it's snowing on much of the penninsula and report on radio of flakes in Syhdem.
1.2C outside strong southerly surface flooding too.
Cheers
Jason.
Just back from the Port Hills and the snowline there was down to about 100 metres although the snow has eased to sleet(9am)
Still raining in Chch and a chilly 4 degrees
100m - settling snow to that level? If so, there must be quite a sharp dividing line between the rain and the snow, as it's been raining in central Chch. (maybe a bit of sleet with it)
yes tich. there has been some sleet in christchurch, "well in my area anyway" saw a few flakes but nothing to rave about never mind its bitterly cold outside with the wind chill around 0 and the temp around 4C.I do see some snow on the port hills, qiute a nice dusting up there.
Looking at the latest sat loops, there seems to be a bit of a break coming followed by what looks to be a trough coming up from way down south...moving pretty fast and who knows what with it...probably nothing, buy anyone else see that/care to comment? (Look at approx. 175 E 50 S)
