I wondered what had happened to him!
Interpretation of ' official ' is a funny thing and the perception by a majority of the listening public(due to plenty of feedback), are they believe the temps given on the tele in the evenings are the official sites because its what they've seen for years and what they have become use to
I do understand what you are referring to and I tend to agree and if someone were to collate data from their own site and send it to the media( or even better a group of sites), I'd be open to that too!
Its often an issue of time(and money)...ok no surprises there!!

I like this 'official' tag to weather readings.
Are they assuming that you have a cheap thermometer that you may have bought from the $2 shop and have it stuck on a roof like what they may have in Darfield
I have a Stevenson'sScreen with a couple of 'cheap' thermometers in them. I regard my readings to be accurate, even though not 'official'

Absolutely agree. I have wireless temperature/hygrometer instrument that I would like to place somewhere outside at home. When you think about how, and where to put it, then it is hard not to have some unwanted interference etc if you don't have a Stevenson Screen.NZstorm wrote:... proper exposure of the instruments.
Exposure is as big an issue as the quality of the instruments.

note that the NRFA stations do go through an annual audit system .....
Scott Tech instruments in Hamilton use to be contracted out to do it
but its all changed now, and is up to each station owner to get it up to specs (or something along those lines)
its amazing how reflected heat radiation gets to where you would not expect it, or what is actualy reflecting it, too

I have my WX Station temp sensor under the eaves on the south side of my house. It has a garden under it and does'nt seem to adversley affected by reflected heat. However, do you guys know any plans on the net for a Stevenson screen? I'd like to mount my sensor and manual guages at the correct height and in a good screen if possible.... my rain guage is in the middle of my garage roof, with no surrounding trees. This auto guage compares very well with my manual rain guage. I also just bought on Trade me a radio HAM mast for my anenometer (and a few other antenna!!) so i hope to get close to the required height for wind instrumentation....
