Ha ha.
I saw a strike hit a power pole. It was just ahead of me on the left as I was driving.
Huge flash of blue light, followed by a very loud bang !
I stopped traffic, I didn't want to drive past it until I could see no more sparks.

the lightning was very powerfull, very bright flashes , even from big distances, and very loud low frequency thunder
better than the usa thunderstorms in some regards (you just dont get as much ligthtning and its hard to see in because of all the rain!
will be good to be able to see more at night out to the west
great photos spwill

Yes, we haven't had a thunderstorm in our vicinity for quite some time.Weathermad wrote:Activity easing a little perhaps for some?...
Although the odd distant rumble, coming from who knows where....the wind can carry sound quite a distance. But check out the lightning off the west coast in the Tazy...sheeeesh

Yay!!!Paul Mallinson wrote:I had a day off today.
What a great read its been following your reports. Quite a day.
I'm not sure when the front is due thru the Auckland area but with thunderstorms occurring on the front and the extra shear involved (backing with height) this could be a scenario for more twisters.

If it came through in the overnight hours it could be that if temps over the land get a chance to fall some, then they may act as a break on the activity, but there will probably be enough wind to keep the temps up through mixing. In these scenario, the thundery activity often takes place over the sea or in the onshore flow off the sea.
From the TV1 weather, I seem to recall that by about midday tomorrow the leading trough which gave today's activity was depicted over the Coromandel and the cold front was somewhere in the Auckland area.
The thunderstorm threat chart is carrying a risk of severe storms in the overnight period to midday tomorrow and more TSs in the afternoon.

I got a really nice reply from the reporter from TVNZ who did the tornado report. It seems the term came from the fire crews on the scene. Anyway, if another tornado occurs hopefully we may not hear the 'mini' word
I sent her a link to the forum and a link to the wikipedia article on tornadoes.
Cheers,
G
