I see a thunderstorm over the Gisborne area. The only TS over NZ so far today which doesn't suprise me as the upper air is so warm.
Yes we had the good day time heating today with 18C dewpoints and just a few small towering Cu developed, Auckland area stayed dry.

Yes muggy again today not to complain i actually enjoy it 8) better than the cold southerlies ;) although could be muggier this wekend.
Been a few spit showers here this evening a decent one just been and gone still mild on 17.4C.
Could be a slight chance tomorrow for thunder mainly inland with a slightly better chance on Saturday but Sunday would have to be my pick with scatterd rain few heavy falls easing to showers by afternoon with perhaps isolated thunderstorms.
If any of these do occur they will be much different to our usual southerly storms.
Also temps into the early 20's with all this precipitation about kind of like NI weather ;) :D .
Cheers
Jason.

Dull with light rain here, very muggy dewpoint of 20C and temp is 21C.
Some heavy showers heading our way for this afternoon by the looks.

Looks like the Thunderstorm in Central Otago late yesterday occured between Alexandra and Omakau. Would that be NewZealands least thundery location.

Not often Welly gets the fohn effect

Iys sticky, damp and close here in the Waitaks, steady light rain, occasional heavy showers. Looks like a wet day or two ahead, something brewing off Kaipara in the last rain radar I saw

A brighter warmer day now here in Auckland. :D

I can't see thunderstorms developing today due to warm upper air.
Will be interesting to see if there is any cooling aloft on the 0000Z NZWP sounding.

I agree with NZ storm. Forecasts have been wrong for several days now, contant promise of heavy rain that doesn't eventuate. At this stage I would say theres more chance of a snowstorm in Auckland than there is thunder today

Northeasterly coming through freshly today with gusts to 55km/h.
Still warm though on 24/ dewpoint 20 :)

Wind may even start to tend anticyclonic easterly over the upper NI later.. that'll be a huge relief after all those westerlies! :D

i think more rain on the way....for the auckland area....i think we are in the firing line this time...
note, there has been 35mm of rain yesterday in northland (brynderwyn)
i.e alot of the heavy rain has gone to the north of auckland...and over the coromandel/BOP

I can't see thunderstorms developing today due to warm upper air.
Can't see much day time heating occuring today for Northland /Ak and sea breezes are very unlikely.

Hi guys,

Mean't to say wind convergence (between nnely over land and more n to nnwly on west coast) rather than sea breeze convergence (habitual).

Whenuapai sounding has cooled 3 degrees at 500 hPa and there are now a few cloud tops of -25 to -29C over northern Northland at 1 & 2pm. Using surface temp of 24C and dewpoint of 19C on this sounding you can start to see how cloud tops can get to that temperature (which co-incides with tops about 20,000 to 25,000ft.) Further cooling will increase the activity.

At 1pm, Paraparaumu 19°C, Levin 29°C

That's a huge difference!!

Yes. Paraparaumu has a cool southwest marine flow and Levin has a northeast flow off the land. We are analysing a surface warm front between the two. The upper part of the warm front lies west to east and is now over north Canterbury.
