Northland weather

Unread post by RODALCO »

Just back from 5 days on the Tutakaka coast.
Temperatures low to mid 20's depending upon the seabreeze.
Some clouds, but overall fine weather.
Unable to spot the comet because of clouds over Whangarei after 20.00 hrs most evenings.
Who put the LED's on the lightning arrestor ?

Back to about 32C in Napier today. Clear start, later partly cloudy and sultry, big buildups in the afternoon with downpours near Have. Nth/Te Mata and a few ks west of Taradale, plus other odd spots.

Should be fine here early tomorrow, but travelling to Rotorua and should run into rain or very heavy showers with some thunder.

Yes, interesting to see a few cb's have blown up along that eastern coast today. That area must have its nose into some cooler upper air with that trough. Also 32C temps help!.

Looks like there was a thunderstorm over the Kaikoura ranges before or around that area anyway doesn't surprise me though with this weather today.
It's overcast with drizzly light rain at times although a dense light rain if that makes any sense  .
Temperature has been up and down too got up to 20C at 12:30pm now down to 16C with a SE breeze but smells quite nice very west coasty  :D coming from someone who enjoys the bush 8) .
Lawns are still looking very green and lush for the time of year and gardens are florishing i don't think I have ever seen so much rain in summer before here.
Cheers

Buckets of rain on Napier-Taupo trip this morning, some areas of thick mist. Cleared for this afternoon, making it easy to visit Waiotapu thermal area. :)
Warm and humid in Rotorua now with some "bright intervals".

PS - Rangitaiki swamp region - what a dreary bit of countryside that is!

I passed thru Kaikoura late morning yesterday, and it was partly cloudy and dry, but a layer of low cloud covered the mountains. :( Had some rain in Wellington in evening, but it cleared up to variable cloud further north (up to Auckland) Cloud obscured the comet, unfortunately. :(

looks like a period of NW to W conditions all next week to occur over NZ...showers on the west coast of the SI, hot and dry in the east of both islands

also ecmwf likes the idea of a major coral sea TC by a week from now...
but thats along way off!

Very different from recent El Nino situations...but 1941/42 had mixtures of cold and cloudy months over Dec/Jan.

Sunny start in Rotorua today but there already signs of big buildups to come.

Hottest day in a long time here, I recorded a high of 29.6°C ... Not in a proper box over grass, but in a spot which is in shade all the time and exposed to wind. I've had the sensor in the same place for almost 5 years

Plus I got nuked at the beach, the glow from my neck should be able to be seen for miles!

To veer off slightly: summer certainly hasn't been around this month in Nelson in the normal sense: if the Stuff site's weather page value of only 149 hours of sun after 27 days  is really correct (a BIG if!), this would be almost pathologically low for there [its low value in records back to 1930 is 179 in 1945, secodn lowest 193]
