But with four linked Lows in the north Tasman, it will stay low and give the SI E to NE and NI with some cold fronts and unsettled weather ...?

I can't see how the weather pattern this week is exceptional/out of the ordinary?
There seems to be a biggish low affecting the NI TUE/WED, but for the SI, at least, no real precip on the cards....lots of fine weather and frosts....speaking of which, -5C this morning!! Brrr...frost is all over almost everything this morning.

The pattern has changed overnight and the upper lows have turned into a High??... (I didn't check any of the forecasted maps...) which will form a ridge of high pressure aligned with NZ and slow down with cold SW over SI and more SE over NI. Settled weather ahead for both islands. More frosts. Low was only -1.9ºC here at two places in Tokoroa

huh?
ECMWF has a gale easterly and heavy rain likely for the upper NI
see:
http://www.ecmwf.int/products/forecasts ... 2007070712!!/
you can see the jet stream developing in the tasman now, which is going to drive the whole thing

Ok- I see the NE now... and as I said before - unsettled weather in the north island with the complexity in Tasman to East of NI. I was viewing the current map from TVNZ which has changed again after 9am... nice pic - I need to save these links of maps for enlightenment and future thoughts... thanks Windy! Still cold and light SE here.

Seems as though the blocking high is starting to get established to the SW of NZ, thus shifting cyclonegenesis (love that word!) westwards toward Northland more, rather than the NSW coast in June.
Will only probably see occasional drizzle from this system here.. with more falling as you head north. I wonder how high these easterlies are going to get though?!

in the past in these egg beater situation, the easterlies have reached 80kts (150kmh or so) in a line from the top of the coromandel penininsular to the kaipara harbour area
if the squash zone can move further south then towns downslope of the coromandel/mt tearoha kamai range are in for a battering (been a long time since they had a big easterly)......and even this far west we can get a bounce effect off the hunua ranges

Still lurking
I see there was a depression develop around it's top NE of the anticyclone around the NW part of New Zealand that sticks away from the general NE to SW shape of the country? The area is Northland or Auckland, I think
Shows you what a good blocking high this evil anticyclone is?

I've definitely got the grumps with this evil anticyclone. Grrrr.
The temperature at Tawa actually reached 10 degrees briefly yesterday, the first time we'd been that high in 6 days. We're back to the gloom with chill rain again today. Too much more of this, and we'll be coming down with cabin fever
I wonder if that bright yellow thing still exists.....

There are times, when you don't want that yellow thing in the sky. For chch it means severe frosts.Wildland wrote:I've definitely got the grumps with this evil anticyclone. Grrrr.

At the moment, we are in a sucky drizzly girly rain type pattern.
Starting Saturday its backs to freezing frosty days with the sun, and I think that is suppose to be the pattern for a long while.
Ive very disappointed with the snow demons this year, hopefully next winter they will make up for it.
