Low to end week
Another shallow low pressure system will cross the upper North Island Friday into the weekend. With the upper air remaining cold rainfall in this system will be convectively enhanced with a good chance of thunder over northern regions given forecast 500mb temps of -25C.
A strong onshore flow for eastern areas of the North Island over the weekend means yet more heavy rain is on the cards. Should also be further snowfall in the North Island ranges from this sytem.

Re: Low to end week
Looks like this system will be weaker than the one earlier in the week given less moisture. Looks like high pressure will build fairly quickly onto the NI early week.

Re: Low to end week
Nice shots of a distant cb there Brian. I noticed that cloud too. The NZWP soundings have looked a bit unstable for the last fews days.
Latest computer model has warmed the air a tad over the upper North Island tomorrow which is nuisance as it could be the difference between thunder and no thunderstorm for us.

Re: Low to end week
Noticed early this morning there were a few strikes recorded around Tauranga as showers pushed through there.
Hardly any wind at all today, highest gust was 15km/h.. led to some nice lazy towering cumulus about.
Good chances for thunder over Northland tomorrow afternoon, with steepening lapse rates.

Re: Low to end week
Grey skies with heavy showers this morning in Auckland. Would need to see a clearance with daytime heating to get thunder here this afternoon I think. Met Service have high risk for Auckland/Waikato today.

Re: Low to end week
Sat pic shows a line of active Cb cloud moving our way from the W/NW, may spoil the Rugby tonight.
I see there are a few Thunderstorms in the line currently.

Re: Low to end week
Very heavy rain here now. Eden park is a stone throw from me so some people getting wet over there. That slight warming trend in the upper air today dampened down our thunderstorm chances. The colder air mass moves in tomorrow but with stabilising conditions.
