There is a full eclipse of the moon on the 28th of August this year - partial phase begins 0851 GMT (8:51pm NZT) and total phase begins 0952 GMT (9:52pm NZT) If skies are clear all stages of the eclipse will be visible from New Zealand.
NZ times are GMT + 12hours
The moon will completely move behind the Earth's shadow - the date of this lunar eclipse is also the date of the full moon.
Forecasts at the METVUW site shows that on the 27th August a large anticyclone should be approaching central NZ - hopefully there will be clear skies, but I must say that would be most unusual, especially over Auckland
Cant wait for it! and its a sat night so thats good seeing as I finish work at 10pm during the week. Im thinking I may head up the port hills for a view, but it will depend on what cloud cover will be about.

Sorry, dude, isn't the 28th a TUES night?
doh' (slaps forehead) stupid computer date thingy had me in september not august!! lol well might be able to get off work early! If you have discovery chammel they are having live feeds of the eclipse.
we may get a clear night because this whole winter when its been a full or a bright one its been clear as i notice it as it shines when trying to sleep unfortunately the sun doesnt play the same game
My weather recordings show that on the full moon of Jun 30th it was a wet day with 21mm, and then the full moon of the 30th July had 9mm with a pm thunderstorm - so full moon wasn't shining here.
All you fortunate people whose skies won't be cloudy must upload some pics of different phases of the eclipse!
Then at least I can see what it looked like
When is this expected to occur is it on Tuesday night? might be hard to veiw because most of Tuesday during the day in Canterbury is meant to be fine but showers at night with a SW change .
Cheers
Jason.

The moon should be high enough in the sky to see from most open areas, but if the weather is what is like now we may get lucky and catch a glimpse during a break in the clouds - but the clouds are moving fast so any view will be brief.
Not looking very good at all for South Waikato at 80%... it will have to be breaks in the cloud if at all... - what's the difference between dark and blackout :- another shade of charcoal !!

Some sunny spells developed here, but rain radar still shows some shower activity to be moving towards the area out of the Tasman.
Edit 6.30:
Moon is in the sky right now, but not showing much behind the cloud
