Righty-ho then,
the general consensus is that march is boring for weather, so I thought that I would post some of me pics from the last month.

Question, for images number 0037, 0038, 0039, can anyone tell me if this Cb formation is close to a supercell.

If one estimates that the height of this puppy to be say, 12km, then this thing must have been about 40kms wide!!. It was so big that I couldn't fit the whole thing in my lense!!!

As it happened, this one never eventuated into anything as it was out at see, I bet my bottom dollar though that there would have been waterspouts associated with this Cb

I see your trying to get picture on here C-nimbus, I had the same problem when I first tried to get pictures on here. I think if your adding an attachment it can't be over 80 kb, it also has to be either JPG or a bmp image (bitmap). If each picture is near 80 kb you'll have to do multiple posts (one post for each picture to get them up on here. If your images are over 80 kb, go into Coral Draw (if you've got it) or some other image type software and shrink it down so the image size (in terms of bytes) goes down to.

If you've got some web space or a site you can put the images on that and use it's link with [img] , [/img] brakets at either end, that way the images can be larger.

If you want you can send me an email at [email protected] with your pictures attached and I'll put them up for you.

(Edited about 1 second later) Ok, scrap all that, you got your pics up!!

Oh well, if anyone else wants any pics up I'll be happy to do that for them. $\:D/$ let the good times roll!

Anyway, reffering to the pics. You must of read my mind! This was that huge Cb up north on Sat Feb 14th when we had a night time lightning storm here in Chch. This link has sat pics for that day, a bit long!:

I woundered myself if this was a supercell or something as it was huge! and the thought about waterspouts definately crossed my mind to. I remember Steven W saying that this storm would of been great to drive through as it was probably severe, I totally agree there. It's just a pitty it was offshore although it did clip Cape Runaway (the Raukumara Range) area.

Yep, thats exactly right Aaron, it was the 14th Feb, cos I had to stay home with my girlfreind for the nite!!!!!

I remember NZstorm posted some photos of that Cb cloud on this forum back on that day . It developed on a weak Front over Coastal Northland and drifted slowly out to sea north of Great Barrier Island and at times it looked spectacular. I'm not sure if we get Super Cell Thunderstorms in NewZealand but that one would have come close.

No reason why we can't have supercells here in NZ - the definition is a storm with a deep rotating updraught (mesocyclone)

That was one huge storm. I'm still kicking myself I was working that day!

Yes, It may have been a supercell. It was quite a persistent storm and certainly would have been severe. But it quickly drifted out to sea along a weak front over the area, so most of its weather occured offshore.
Photo below was taken around 6pm, but storms started firing around 3pm. This storm during its development phase between 5-6pm looked like something out of Kansas in spring. Strong congestus punching the tropapause. Would have made a great photo if I was close enough. But I started the chase way to late. The static from this cloud was constant over a couple of hours.

This photo taken at Waiwera, 6.23pm, looking eastward. Developing thunderstorm which was in the vicinity of northern Coromandal Peninsula.
Another of several blow ups along a slow moving frontal line over the area on that day. 14/02/04.

Making some gross assumptions

I measure the cloud as 65km across - bit elongated though - measured from south-west to north-east (on screen the cloud is the same size as the distance from roughly Miranda to port Waikato)

Using the same method I recon it is 140km across (same size as the distance between Miranda and Pouto)

If the images were much larger I could get some quite accurate measurements using some image analysis tools designed for taking measurements from photographs and maps. Actually if anyone wants the software - it's free - , get it from http://www.scioncorp.com/pages/scion_image_windows.htm It's a bit hard to learn but it's awesome and very accurate.

The 'Waiwera Storm photo', the cb was a good 100km distant from my position. This cell is just visable on the 6pm satellite pic out to the east of Coromandal over Mercury Island.

I use a FujiFilm FinePix 3000, its a fairly cheap SLR style digital. Its has bugger all features but it takes nice piccies!!

Those photos that you took NZStorm are awesome, what sort of camera do you use?

I remember going to track this storm down, and I got to about Murrays Bay only to realise that she was waaaay out to sea!

Saw some really cool feeding structures associated with this, but what surprised me was the extent of the glaciated anvil....it just seemed to go on for miles

Cb's are always further away than you think. In your photos the cb is a good 100km plus away.

South and East Auckland seem to catch the South Westerly and Westerly winds more than Central Auckland and the Northshore. The Waitakere's must offer some protection.
The weather pattern into next week looks conducive to afternoon convection showers .

We don't get the NW winds too bad here but if the isobars are close the NW can get gusty but drops again inbetween the gusts,The NE isnt as bad as the north shore,brings more rain than wind here and is its strongest when raining,the N&SE here is often light with no wind and the southerly can be gusty but fine. A westerly isnt to bad especially if its a warm westerly,if its a cold one it brings Cb/Cu and can go SW in squalls anytime.The SW is far the worse its just constant and gets stronger during the day
