Another cold outbreak Sunday or Monday

Unread post by tich »

Looks like this one could be more general over NZ that the last one, which I think only grazed the southeast of the North Island (eg Castlepoint's 10C daytime temps on Wednesday). I've heard predictions of hail for both islands on Monday in today's long-range, and Augie Auer thought it would be an unseasonably cold Sunday when he spoke on Wednesday.

It's tempting to think that this is the beginning of a harsh winter, but from past memory, I know that early cold spells don't necessarily lead to severe cold winters. (eg 1993's cold summer and autumn, but very mild June)

The coldest weather will be out to the East of the South Island and thats were most of the action will be but very cold showery weather should still get into Eastern areas with that High moving in. Late March- April is a bit like November - December in that Thunderstorms sometimes occur around the cold change's as they move up the coast but timming is often a factor, an afternoon change is usually more active.

Yes, a perfect day. Rainfall for March so far is just 6mm and we are on target to top 200hrs sunshine this month. I notice regions in the North Island such as the sheltered Bay of Plenty have already got over 200hrs.

I agree with spwill on the next cold outbreak. The worst of it will occur out to sea, east of the country. How many times do we see that happen.
Should still get a brief period of very cold wintry conditions with sleet to near sea level in South Otago. :)

The Chathams had better watch out then. Remember, we're still in March, though less than a week now 'til April, and I recall cold wintry outbreak at the beginning of April 2 years ago. 10 years before that (1992) I remember an even more wintry blast on about the 3rd April, with snow on Dunedin's Hill Suburbs, the Rimutaka and Desert Roads, and even Mt Pirongia in the Waikato.

Looks like the south and east of the North Island should feel the full impact tomorrow, with some hail and snow predicted down to about 1200 metres on the mountains. Seems like the South Island should be getting the coldest weather now and/or tonight.

The coldest air may not have arrived today, but it was already a pretty chilly day for March over NZ as a whole - TV1 Weather showed only Northland and coastal Bay of Plenty as having above 20C maximums (and then only 20 or 21C). The front bringing the really cold air from high latitudes must be hitting us now in Chch - down to about 8C with frequent showers, including a bit of hail. (no thunderstorm activity that I've noticed)

Early Winter all I can say set back by that ugly February probably cooled the sea down earlier allowing the cold weather to get to us not aided by persistant SW cooling it furthur :(
