In the last half hour or so, its pretty bad, it goes calm for about 30 seconds then massive gusts, we are taking civil defense type stuff.

Yes.
Very windy out here in West Melton, much more severe than yesterday.
The house is shuddering at times.

No, wouldn't go as far as to say 'Civil Defense' type stuff, but in the last twenty minutes or so in Prebbleton, it certinaly has been gusting more that 50 km/h.

Significantly stronger here than yesterday, averaging 36 gusting 50 (knots) for the last hour or so, so a true gale. Lots of small twigs broken off trees, a few bigger branches, but nothing major yet.

Re: Massive winds hitting chch
Well I was going to say a bit of an exaggeration going on in here with local stations no higher than 70km/h, but your reading Tony is quite high, gale force indeed. Metservice sure would be under attack if the wind became severe as they could not warn anyone.

Re: Massive winds hitting chch
It's all going to subside a bit by the time I hit the scene...
A hybrid day here today - no early morning drop in winds like yesterday, when they tended towards W/WSW from NW, but continuing fresh to strong and gusty. Far enough from NW to keep any low cloud confined to the ranges to the north, but not far enough to cut the speed too much.

Re: Massive winds hitting chch
Winds eased now here in west Melton but those westerly rain band-extensions off the Alps have been delivering some rain here from about quarter past 5. Nothing much really but enough to wetten the ground and save me watering some trees
One or 2 distant sferics heard as well
Low barometer, so anything could happen

Re: Massive winds hitting chch
I am in Burwood as well, near the Bottle Lake Forest, and all we had was big rain drops...the hail musta been very isolated...HOWEVER, looking to the SW it looks mighty DARK and menacing
