Mixed (but still wintry) Easter weekend

Unread post by tich »

Looks like this Easter will be a bit better than what we've had this week. After some early showers this morning, it partially cleared up in Chch, but it still feels wintry. The higher hills of Banks Peninsula still have a dusting of snow - probably getting some more during yesterday's cold, wet weather. This is unusual - normally when snow dusts these hills this early in the year, it quickly melts during the day following the fall, but this time it has persisted (at least on the shady slopes) above about the 650 metre level.

Peninsula hills might possibly even get some more snow if Sunday's predicted cold blast has enough moisture, though the worst of this next system will probably affect the far south, and then the Chatham islands. (sleet forecast for there on Monday)

The high does its usual fashion of moving north as it does in the tasman while Australia always has a high 15 deg furthur south than us.Its so easy to forecast in this country at least for the North Island

The High in the South Tasman is not in the right position to deliver the Wintry weather we thought might come this Easter, unless you live in Invergargill.
Looks like we have a better weather week coming up but with frosts for some. :D

Yes, tonight we may get again the occasional flash around the back of BP with this cold front but generally it looks like a better week coming up with this 1030+ anticyclone passing over us .. but
a) Will it be a 'dirty' high?
b) Will it be a 'frosty' high?
c) Will it be a warm high ?

The last two recent thunderstorm events in the Banks Peninsula area developed because the cold pool (area of deepest instability), passed right over Canterbury. Today that doesn't look to be the case with only shallow instability coming up the Canterbury coast. Hence, thunder/lightning not possible today. :(

There is some quite chilly air in the south seas, so maybe the snow level will be lower than the 600m predicted for the south. Certainly more hail on the way for Southland and Coastal Otago over the next day. :D

After a chilly start (probably light frosts in sheltered places) around Akaroa, it was quite mild by early afternoon - certainly alot warmer than recent days, but still not enough to melt all the snow from the tops. However, the southerly change hit about midafternoon, briefly strong and gusty. It soon clouded over and has cooled down to about 10C, but no rain yet.

Horrid day here again with the usual gale blowing with a mostly leaden sky and showery and cold
I may have woken up to see a cloud free sky but then its only possible in dreams or going on an airplane somewhere far ;)
