The persistent cool-cold SouthWesterlies of recent weeks look like they are on the way out for a little while .
It will be very nice to have some average to above average temperatures for a change.

The southwester does look on its last legs. Showery in Auckland today with the air unstable to 2500m, freezing level at a nippy 1600m.
I suggest temperatures so far this April for Auckland are 2 to 3C below normal. Last time we had a cool April was 1997, but I think this one will end up being alot cooler.
Looks like an anticyclone will be in control of NZ's weather this week with settled cool weather but the bad stuff never far away.
I found this picture. It is of 'steam devils' over hot pools at Rotorua.
We had 1mm from brief showers last night near Akaroa, but today it's just been partly cloudy, with a cold, gusty southwesterlies. Last night's radar only showed light precipitation crossing the peninsula - nowhere near a thunderstorm or even hail scenario, though the raindrops did sound as if they were quite large ones.
It will be very nice to have some average to above average temperatures for a change.
NZ will probably have to wait until northwesterlies arrive later in the week for warm temperatures - we'll probbably be getting frosty nights in many areas for at least the next few days.

To get NW (and of course easing in the wind/showers)in Auckland the high centre has to move east of the country otherwise we are stuck with horrid SW yet again, looks it tomorrow too
There was an unforecast light shower(s) overnight , but skies were clear in Chch by dawn. Must've been an extra weak front (cold or warm?) or maybe a weak convergence zone.

its good the SWer has finally died.....it was drying everything out too much, and it was cold too!
we need some nice warm rain to get some better grass growth, otherwise the cows will have to be dried off soon.....i.e some warm rain is worth at least 6000$ to most dairy farmers stil milking cows.....at this time of year....but i cant see any coming for another week !
