New TV3 Weather

Looks like the new TV3 weather will begin tonight, so far from the tiny little amount the've shown on the news updates it looks different from TV1 and good at that! $\:D/$ We'll have to see what it's like later.

, a more scientific/academic sort of approach, I was looking for...but acceptable for public broadcast.
The rain radars looked OK though, a bit like the Southland one.

I'm afraid no-one can replace Jim Hickey or a proper weather person ie. Augie Auer from doing the weather.

TV3 weather graphics looked interesting.

It won't get down to minus 1C in Dunedin City tonight as forecast on TV3.
Dunedin will drop to about + 3C or 4C.

It looks better than one but its probably the new graphics,However they give the same ole forecast

I would also like to mention, it did look a bit muddled especially going through the lows then the highs.

Overall, I won't be taking time out like I used to, to watch the TV weather.

I thought it was appalling. Way too much information for the average viewer to take in (way too much for me to take in anyway) and too much eye candy distracting from the message. For example, rain was visible falling in the graphics used for both Christchuch and Wellington, yet both places are forecast to have dry weather all day. I think the elf-like Ms Marsh even had to explain that the rain visible in the Wellington graphic was for the South Islanbd West Coast - very confusing for Wellington viewers, and even more so for West Coast viewers because their forecast was also for dry weather! I hate to imagine how confusing the conflicting messages of graphics, text, symbols and voice over is all going to become on a complex weather day.

My advice - simplify, simplify, simplify. Or, KISS. [/list]

Yes I must say it wasn't amazing or anything, the rain radar would become interesting on a day of a thunderstorm or big rainy event (mayby they should only pull that one out then). The little part I saw on the news updates etc was like a teaser and it got me intrigued, the result so far is I don't think it's that great. I still like TV1's flyby and like you say John no one can replace Jim or Augie which I never got to see a great deal of due to him being on a while ago (Augie that is).

But, I won't totally make my mind up now and give it a week or two.

I just relised that new TV3 weather guy was the Tegal guy who did the cooking adds on TV not long ago, mayby he could add a recipe of the week into his forecast? lol. Seriously though, I've only seen him once so far so no judgement can be made there yet, I'm guessing he an't no meteorologist though. Perhaps we should go with WXgirls idea of bearded men with those particular socks which I can't remember? hehe!

hmmm,
for my pennies worth, i thought it kicked arse!!

Toni Marsh is NOT great to look at, she looks like she smoked too much "P" or something on the weekend as she always looks haggard!

My only prob with the graphics was when it went from night to day, it looked like someone had turned the light on!.

Other than that i thought it was cool, cant wait to see a thunderstorm on there. The other aspect was the fly-by around the main centres, damn cool I thought.

I do agree with TonyT however about sticking to the basics. In this case tho, i'm just a kid in a candy store!!

For Auckland at night they should show a orange opaque sky rather than the southern cross as we can hardly ever see the thing

They probably need to change the colouring of the temperatures/banners ie the blue is hard to see against the sea graphics,the grey is a little better

Front page of todays Ashburton Guardian reads "Ashburton falls off the weather map".The guardian writes,State of the art maps and fancy graphics were plentiful.But all these high tech gizmos were totally useless to those of us trying to find out the weather forecast for Ashburton and the surrounding districts because it wasnt on the map.
Our town which boasts 15 000 residents had been dropped from the weather reports.To add insult to injury the revamped map included Reefton-population 1000.

Well I watched TV1 tonight and will stay with that channel.

I agree with the comments that the TV3 graphics might be a bit complicated (saw them last night) but then I thought once you get used to the set up, it would look easier on the eye.

I agree with those sentiments. TV3 need a Geograhpy lesson.

Ha, on the front page of the Waikato Times, it said people were upset as Hamilton wasn't a main centre... Just like what happened when TV 1 rolled out their new graphics.
TV3 will put Hamilton as a main centre, it's just that they're waiting for more info from MetService.

I usually consider if a town has a radio station it would have to warrent being in the weather and Ashburton has had 3ZE for many years now.ie Levin,Tokoroa Kaitia must be all similar sizes.

...but Hamilton isn't a main centre, it's a provisional town and too close to Auckland.

There are now only 3 main centres in NZ, being Auckland Wellington and Christchurch. Dunedin used to be regarded as a main centre but it dosen't seem to be important anymore.

Ashburton has dropped off the map â€“ the TV3 weather map that is.
Mid Canterbury residents sat glued to their screens this week to watch the television stationâ€™s new look weather reports.
State-of-the-art maps and fancy graphics were plentiful. But all these high-tech gizmos were totally useless to those of us trying to find out the weather forecast for Ashburton and the surrounding district because it wasnâ€™t on the map.
Our town, which boasts 15,000 residents, had been dropped from the weather reports. To add insult to injury the revamped map included Reefton â€“ population 1000.
The cause of this grave oversight is TV3â€™s new weather software program called WeatherScape, which it has adopted in a bid to find flashier ways to present forecasts.
â€œIt provides them with more tools to be able to talk about the weather and display forecasts for the whole country,â€ Met Service spokesman Chris Stephenson said.
TV3 director of news and current affairs Mark Jennings explained the new system only allowed for four locations with distinct weather patterns to be displayed on the east coast of the South Island â€“ Kaikoura, Christchurch, Oamaru and Timaru.
â€œItâ€™s not that Ashburton isnâ€™t important, itâ€™s just that we have a few logistical issues to overcome,â€ he said.
Fearing the wrath of Mid Canterbury residents, Mr Jennings said we could see Ashburton back on the map, once these problems had been resolved.
â€œWe will be responding to people and tweaking the forecast in the coming months,â€ he said.
The station is looking to include Ashburton in the Christchurch regional â€˜hoverâ€™ - an aerial view of Christchurch and surrounding towns.
Leading the battle cry to get Ashburton returned to its rightful place on the TV3 weather map is mayor Murray Anderson.
â€œWe are central to the South Island and the third largest centre in Canterbury so itâ€™s essential to include Ashburton. Itâ€™s also important for public awareness to get the name of Ashburton into peopleâ€™s living rooms across New Zealand every day,â€ Mr Anderson said.
The Met Service has also sold the weather software to the British-based BBC and the Middle East, so we may see Birmingham and Baghdad disappear too.

Hamilton has a healthy population of 170,000, quite enough to be a main centre. Hamilton is also quite different to the Auckland weather, we have frosts and fogs, they don't. And we don't have a howling wind

From latest population figures Hamilton has 172,000, Tuaranga 103,000
Dunedin 105,000. But Dunedin is losing people were as TG is the fastest growing city in NZ.

The population boom of the Bay of Plenty/Tauranga is because of the weather there. People shift there for a meditteranean style climate. The BOP has sunshine hours similar to Nelson.

I reckon in NZ the best weather is in Napier/Gisborne although they get the southerlies or Blenhiem(Their easterlies are bad but not often)

Sunshine and temperatures between the two regions are similar but Tauranga gets 1349mm rainfall annually while Napier gets 880mm.
BOP would get more thunderstorms though. Also, T is closer to AK which has got to be a bonus.

I finally saw the TV3 weather last night ... I was aghast ... i spent the whole of the time trying to figure out what the bloody hell i was watching ... to tell you the truth, i'd felt like i'd had a few too many wines ... it just had that effect on my head. Like a ride at the fair or something. I did like their graphics at the very end though on the not-moving map of NZ for the long range. There is technology for progress but this just seems to be technology for technology's sake ... we can do 3D maps of NZ and plaster the centres all higgledy piggledy over the screen ... etcetc .. oooh. I give it a thumbs down ... it's just sensory overload!!!![/i]
