Anticyclonic Gloom

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

A real classic day of 'Anticyclonic Gloom" in Christchurch today with light rain/drizzle showers and a 8/8 low cloud cover. I got 3.2mm so far :)

....it's exhausted chasing 'violent drizzle' all day ;) ...just kidding

Forecast for Chch was morning and evening drizzle, but the drizzle hadn't ceased by early afternoon. Then it turned to rain, and rained solidly for about 1 1/2 hours :o (near central city), before reverting to drizzle. Must've been a convergence zone. The midday and 3PM radars show what looks like nothing more than drizzle patches.

Same for Omarama. Wonderful.

Oh, by the way Andy, your sig should say "Driest TOWN in Omarama", otherwise we're all going to have to stand around you pointing, and chanting "Liar, liar, pants on fire!"...everybody knows that Lauder is the driest place in New Zealand. :P

I see the weather staying quite cloudy along the Canterbury coast into next week. Low level moisture and a tendency for onshore winds will produce coastal stratus/low stratocumulus. Should be fine inland though.

That's sad; it's been yet another perfect day (and night) here in Omarama. It'd be boring were it not just so darn nice...

Was dull with low misty cloud and light drizzle around Akaroa early this morning, but the weather has improved since then - sunshine breaking through the clouds from about noon.

Perfection here. Not a cloud, not a breeze, and the barbecue is working overtime.

Great day Saturday, and even better today. Just wish Anzac Day fell on the Monday as it looks like another beaut tomorrow.

This morning we've been getting this really foggy mist similar to last year, airport got delays this morning to. But it's clearing now and the sun is shinning through in all its glory! very calm to with no wind, might pick up later though as this stuff burns off.

Might I add I just recalled my Dad telling me about how he saw some ball lightning when he was in Australia!! Bazar sounding story, he was at a friends place and woke up in the middel of the night to a thunderstorm and a ball of light (orangey in colour he reconned, he said it was so quick though so its hard to remember) came buzzing round the room infront off him and sort off vanished into thin air. Not a bang like I've read stories about. He said it took the TV out that was in the room and ruined it, there were no windows open or anything. We're not scientists but it did happen, not sure if electricity can pass though glass, can it??

Another ball lightning account I've been tolled is one by a guy who used to be in the SAS and when he was a kid he lived in Reefton. They were in class during a stormy day and outside a ball of light came down bluish in colour and unlike the account of above by my Dad this one did go Bang! and scorched part of a tree that was in the school field/yard area.

Off to buy some tramping boots!! :D
