Heavy rain about central NZ tomorrow

Unread post by tich »

Looks like some heavy rain tomorrow, probably affecting the areas hit by the big February event. Similar scenario, with colder southerly change meeting a trough/low to the north, though I doubt that it'll be anything like February. Though it does look like a cold change, the coldness will probably be in the form of low maximum temperatures under the cloud and rain, rather than a low freezing level, unlike the wintry blast earlier in the month.

Some unforecast drizzle today in Chch :o , but fine by evening. Should be wet by tomorrow morning though.

its great to watch 2 different airmasses like this collide!
already there are things happening in the central tasman, heading towards the western NI...good, need some more rain still here...things have greened up lots though, and i was pleased to see the tv1 weather girl say there were happy farmers around with the rain that fell!

Not so bad in Chch this morning - a bit of light rain and a cold southerly freshening a little, but not as bad as was predicted yesterday. seems like the front is moving north a bit quicker than first thought. Still could be plenty of action up north should different systems collide.

Well the weather is crap down here in Omarama today. Cool, but not cold; drizzle but no real rain; murky grey cloud, without snow...it's like Auckland without the traffic or John Banks...BAH! Keep it up there please!

Auckland has John Banks while Otago has Shrek the Sheep.

Have more Cu building to our South and new Cb forming. Todays convection has been summer like. :D

Only some very light showers this morning, and a partial clearance (to just partly cloudy) this afternoon. Cold though - they got that one right.

In the 14 hours between 4pm today (Wednesday) and 6am Thursday
morning, up to 75mm of rain could fall in some places, especially
east of Te Puke. Rainfall rates are likely to be rather variable, and
could reach 15-25mm/hr at times. Further showers are expected on
Thursday, some of which may be heavy.

Great to see some unstable conditions... it's been a few months!

There were quite a few towers going up during the drive home, most of them fell apart pretty quickly. Way off to the north there were some very high tops that looked good... couldn't get a picture of them from the motorway as the traffic was flowing for a change.

BOP had some decent rain last night with 93mm recorded at Tuaranga.

The cb development around Auckland today looked fairly minor with the T/cu were glaciating out around the 6000m level.

Afternoon heat shower just south of Manukau City.

T/cu were building upto about 6000m then glaciating.

Very heavy rain in the showers. Sperics observed.

neat photos guys!
some observations i made:
the showers developed very fast
the upper level movement was a big haphazard, and at times was tending to want to build against the surface easterly
this made the movement of the showers hard to predict....they tended to die quickly once they moved from the growing area....
(they went all around us here all afternoon!!)

Another overnight deluge in the Bay of Plenty with 73mm at Tauranga.
Thats on top of 93mm day before. Some quite active looking cb affecting that area. Plenty of spherics on am band this morning.

I think there is a higher chance of a thunderstorm or two forming in the Auckland vicinity today than yesterday. Upper air looks a bit colder this morning.

6.45am Currently partly cloudy, calm, 14C. :)
