How much do you pay for ordinary unleaded petrol in NZ ?

Unread post by vinny »

Hi

I used to live in gisborne nz about 8.5 years ago.

I was wondering what the prices are on average around nz for unleaded petrol "91" and diesel and lpg these days. ????

Where i am in perth it is now 139.9 for unleaded
and 170.9 for diesel
65 cents for lpg

but most bps today have put the price up to 1.53 (the highest ever for perth)

vinny.

Sorry, don't look at that other oily stuff ;)

Why is diesel so much more expensive than patrol over there? I gather you dont have the same miles taxes on diesel as we do here but i wouldnt have thought it would be more expensive than 91 petrol.

I paid $1.89 a litre on Wed last week and i just heard today it went up another 3 cents so i think it would be at $1.92. I shall find out tomorrow when i go to fill up.

Here in NZ the tax is paid seperately in the form of road user tax. I guess in Australia they build the tax into the fuel cost like our petrol has the tax. Our diesel is cheap because it contains no tax, the petrol does.

BP is up to $188.9 a litre today here in Christchurch. The other fuel companies will probably increase their prices tomorrow.
It seems like a weekly occurance lately of fuel companies to raise petrol prices every week now roughly around a Tuesday.
Their target of it being $2 a litre by Mother's Day and $3 for the Queens Birthday WE
Its up to about $118 a barrel now :(

Geepers, crude oil has just gone past $120 a barrel. This will equate to more than $2 a litre for 91 octane in about 5 weeks time.

Looks like we may have made it to or past peak oil.

Lets hope the doom and gloom merchant's aren't right about what happens next.

Diesel is high over here because i think the demand is so high for it here and there are shortages of it in some places.
Diesel has always been higher than petrol in australia... well since i have been here anyway.

Petrol has broken the highest ever record here... it is up to 1.53 at the bp near my place today and signifies the beginning of a new price cycle.

though the fuel cycle here is 2 weeks so in the next fortnight it should drop down to 1.40 -1.45again .. before a new cycle begins again!!

what were prices of 91 petrol like in 1999 in nz??... in qld australia it was 85cents to 95 cents a litre then

http://www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au/--- this shows the prices over here.

I believe nearly half of what we pay at the pump is tax.
Our high NZ dollar x US dollar has been a cushion against much higher prices although the weakening US dollar is one reason for the surge in Oil prices.

I think it might have been a bit more than that Michael. Late 1999 I was involved in Gull's entry into the NZ market. They launched with a discounted price of 84.3 cent's a litre, which at the time was about 7 cents a litre cheaper than the competition.

I took plenty of photo's of various price boards (that belong to my employer) at the time. I just asked him to check the timeframe and pricing I recall. He advised "your memory is accurate".

It was interesting to hear on Newstalk ZB this morning (3ZB) with Richard Greene coming up with various petrol prices around the world. The cheapest was equal to NZ$14 in Kuwait to fill up your tank and in Britain is was up to equal to about $3.30 for a litre of petrol.

do you have price cycles in nz, like the capital cities in australia do?

Our price has gone up due to the cycle and is at the top.... then over the next 12-13 days it drops beofre going up on the 14th day.

Currently at the bp near me

1.55 for 91 unleaded
172.9 for diesel
68cents for lpg

how come lpg is more expensive in nz?

Looks like the $2.00 mark has been cracked in Westland for Mobil and Gas Alley companies.

We cracked the NZ$2.00 mark on Friday which was another increase last week to the increase we have been having on what I have been calling "Petrol Tuesdays".
It will interesting to see what next Tuesday's increase will be?

surprised there has not been much talk about LPG...the people who have LPG converted cars must be laughing...
I wonder if the number of conversions has gone up recently?
The LPG conversion, using the sequential injection system, costs around $4-$4,500 plus GST, on average. Pricing depends on the location and number of tanks and whether you opt for dedicated LPG or gas and petrol. The pay back on the conversion costs depends on you annual mileage and running costs.

Based on the figures Paul Sutton has done in his research (with some alterations for recent fuel price adjustments for both LPG and petrol) the conversion will have paid for itself in just under two years.

Last time I had an alternative fueled vehicle was over 20 years ago.

Must admit LPG is very tempting these days. Think I might still have an Impco LPG kit from a 500 CFM 2 Barrell Holley on a 302 Cleveland kicking around somewhere (Off the old Falcon). I did play with it on a Rotary engine we blew up some years later, not sure if I threw it with the motor though.

Wow, that bought back some memories.

Paid 204.9 cents a litre today for 91, 98 was 215.9 :(

There's a great website of a kiwi guy who converted an old mitsi to electric, pretty cool stuff.

Crazy how quickly petrol has shot past the $2 mark.

Well cheaper to fly from Dunedin to Christchurch than drive now (as long as pacific blue keep their promo fares going that is!)

Saw gas up at about $2.20 a litre for 91 the other day. Dearest so far, a little remote store between Te Teko and Murupara, Kopuriki I think it was.
