I'm taking delivery of a new Prius hybrid today. Nothing to do with saving the environment, everything to do with cutting my fuel bill (which at current prices is around $7500pa).

The year is 2086; all the oil in the world has run out, but on the first Tuesday of every May, men and women come to the park and hit old petrol cans with sticks and burn an effigy of Michel Cullen, they sing and dance around all wearing necklaces made of petrol caps.

We, too, have just traded in...our 1993 Toyota Corolla (prolly still has another 400,000 km to go for the car, but nevermind...) which was only getting between 9 and 10km per litre for a 2005 Mazda Demio, which just recently got 14.1km/litre...overall we save money in the long run for petrol, but the cost of the car makes it UNeconomical for the first 5 years, though...spending money to save money, as it were...my calculations were saying petrol would need to be at $4/litre for it to be IMMEDIATELY economical, but hey...the "boss" (ie wife) wanted a more modern run-about type car ](*,) ](*,) ;)

In the long run, over a 10-year period (provided petrol is still AVAILABLE in 10 years) it will save us money...and I know this may sound wierd, but when you are in the market for a new/newer car, you start to notice more the other types of cars on the road...I must say here in CHCH there are a LOT of little runabout type cars on the road, moreso than ever before, for sure.

The more serious concern about an oil shortage is the lack of ability to produce plastics...

91 Octane seems to be 211.9 to 213.9
95 Octane seems to be 216.9 to 220.9
98 Octane without Ethanol seems to be 221.9 to 226.9

Shocking how these prices are going up.

Gull is cheapest and BP dearest in my opinion.

Two 6c a litre increases in one week :(

Still 2.059 for 91 in Tokoroa I think... the V6 is in for panel repairs, not very economical but the 1.8 EFI 12V does 14kms/L with 5up but controlled driving. Its a 1987 Capella but it runs superbly, almost 200K but is so reliable. using the 14speed to work for the 10kms every day... that's expensive when I get home each night, requires 2 or 3 beers and some nuts to go with it!! ;)

Interesting to note in Sydney on the weekend that 91 octane with 10% Ethanol is 3c a litre cheaper than 91 without.

Oh to be able to buy gas here at their pricing.

Well i only use my 93 Carolla for the trips between Auckland and Hamilton. I bike and walk everywhere while in auckland. It does 500km on a 40L tank if i am only going between Hamilton and Auckland. So thats 12.5km/L i think. As soon as i have to do a bit of runing around it drops to only 450km per tank. So i see no point trading it in. Worth more to me having it than not having it and it has cost absolutly nothing apart from standard servicing. Its comming up 200,000km on it and has atleast double that in its life if petrol is around long enough.

Its so anoying just watching the price rise 12cents in 48hours for the most stupid of reasons. Most of the rise has been caused be "speculation". Atleast i filled up at $2.009/L just before the first 6cent rise came through.

Believe me, J--me--h, I LOVED the Corolla...those things will last and last and last...but I just couldn't convince the wife otherwise ](*,) ](*,) ...having said that, considering what we bought (a 2005 Mazda Demio/manual 5 speed...runabout wee little thing that it is!) was "only" $12990 with 13100 km(pretty low!), we thought it was a pretty good deal (we only got $2000 on the trade-in, bringing it to$10990 but hey...) Turner's was showing anywhere from $500-$6000 for '93 Corollas, depending on kms...and ours was around the 182,000km mark and they were going for ~$2500 at Turners, so not too shabby...plus he threw in on-road costs :D

Well, I've had the hybrid 4 days (700km already) and at this early stage I'm getting approx 4.4l/100km around town, and 4.9l/100km on the open road. This is during the running-in stage obviously, and I'm told that the economy rate will only improve with time. Still learning to drive with the new technology. Gotta say, I'm thrilled to be getting those numbers so early in the piece.

I ain't no greenie - it's all about the $$$.

BTW, to digress slightly, I attended a seminar today hosted by one of NZ's (and in fact the world's) leading leading fund managers. I found it interesting that one of the major factors they incorporate into their economic projections for NZ is the soil moisture defecit/surplus nationwide, and in fact the point was made that we as a country are effectively "exporters of rainfall".

After a visit to the city centre on Saturday night in Christchurch,I have come to the conclusion that after seeing all the boy and girl races still going round and round in circles all night, that obviously the price of petrol is'nt hurting yet. :? And needs to be much higher

Well in perth australia we are currently paying on average 158.7 which is about 2 dollars nz for 91.

premium is 165.4 or in nz dollars 2.10

diesel is 185.4 average but is 188.9 at most bp's ... that is 2.40 in nz!!!!!

lpg is averaging 72 cents per litre or 92 cents per litre nz

Hmm... seems slightly cheaper for fuel in australia than nz... or is it?

Great!! petrol prices must be hurting. This morning we had a line of traffic, not for the first time I have seen this, ](*,) heading into the city from the south on highway one, because some idiot has decided to save petrol by doing 70kph in 100kph zone with out pulling over and letting other traffic past.  I mean dont get me wrong I'm all for saving petrol but if your going to go slow then my opinion is don't force every one else to. Came across this gas station in Texas which had closed down. Interestingly it was still showing the petrol price from closing day, photo . I think petrol is about $4 per gallon over there now.

Prices have tumbled about 10% since the price of crude dropped.

Now typically $201.9 a litre for 91 Octane, $206.9 for 95 and $211.9 for 98 or 95 with 10% ethanol blend.
