Heavy Rain for SI East Coast 28-29th June
Well I see the Metservice are now hooking on to heavy rain tomorrow from Canterbury northwards in a southerly flow. Could be a good freshner for Mt Hutt etc
Thought this might be worthy of a separate thread now

Gale southwesterlies are forecasted for tommorow... Cant recall last time we had a "gale" or very windy day here.. In this part of town anyway.. Sounds exciting

Weather Watch for heavy rain and gales is for North Cantebury and Kaikoura Coast - I'm not sure about Chch.

We had heavy rain for about half an hour, its now stopped in my side of town, I think the worst of it comes tonight, not that windy by the way.

Re: Heavy Rain for SI East Coast 28-29th June?
11:00 am radar looks very interesting for Canty...lots of precip down near Ashvegas and...maybe just the radar and NOT saying this to incite panic and what not , but it looks, well..."snowy".... (probably just the 'angle of the bedangle' that it picks up precip out to sea..just seems overly reflective to me, is all.....)
I know, I know...850 temps and THK levels are way to high for anything here, but the ski fields (by the looks of webcams) and place like Hanmer are gonna get quite a bit of snow out of this system.
EDIT: I note that the M/S have issued this as part of their most recent heavy rain warning:
"People there are advised that rivers and
streams may rise rapidly, and that there is the potential for localised surface
flooding. It should also be noted that heavy snow is likely above 500 metres
and a watch for this will be maintained as there is a slight risk of the snow
level lowering into our warning criteria, that is below 500 metres."

Getting a bit gusty from the S.W. here in Rolleston, presently 6.5c and rising,Baro 989mb.Hoping the temps would be lower than this but never mind, might get some sleet on Sunday if the models pan out better.

Yeah, I know what you mean, things are just not adding up, I'm looking for a temprature drop by the way of Physics and the models but can't understand where this warmth is coming from ,may be I'm missing somthing but I would seriously be expecting sleet at least by nowgllitz wrote:EDIT: I note that the M/S have issued this as part of their most recent heavy rain warning:

Re: Heavy Rain for SI East Coast 28-29th June?
The depression is completely cut off. There is no significant thermal advection into it, and fairly minimal advection around it. If you wanted it to get significantly colder you would need to find some significantly colder air nearby, and there ain't any!Karshvardidgâh wrote:Yeah, I know what you mean, things are just not adding up, I'm looking for a temprature drop by the way of Physics and the models but can't understand where this warmth is coming from ,may be I'm missing somthing but I would seriously be expecting sleet at least by now

Re: Heavy Rain for SI East Coast 28-29th June
Your right there Tony there is no colder air being pulled up from the ice caps just a deep low with rain predicted to get heavier as it moves over land.
Some good rainfall totals overnight i would think from Rakia northwards, and maybe a period of southerly gales for a time.
Rain picked up abit this afternoon for awhile but its more or so lighter at the moment with a fresh cold southerly, also abit of cold rain which suggests the snow level is around 500m .
Cheers
Jason.

Cool day in CHCH today with drizzle to rain at times, looking like heavier falls overnight.. Jeffs station has notched up nearly 17mm so far. Perhaps 30-40mm by tomorrow morning.
