WOW, i just watched the loop of that. It only took like 2 frames to go from nothing to that beast. It really did explode didnt it. Looks like we should get some decent amounts of rain if we catch a thunderstorm tomorrow moring. Hopefully we get a nice one explode just off the coast. That will make for a fun day.

Yes, some impressive Cb blow ups out in the Tasman tonight.
Current Auckland dew points are 15C, great moisture levels for the time of year.

my boltec is placing the strikes too close,,,,i.e from the cb east of whangerei or is it the cell nw of the city that is putting strikes out ahead of the rain,.....from the anvil...that its picking up...hummm

Getting pounded by torrential rain here. 19mm in the last 23minutes. Masses of surface water, sadly some people will probably be getting flooded. Still raining heavily.

Worth keeping an eye westward now. I hoping surface flow can stay NE here to enhance convergence on incoming cb lines. GFS is plotting an active front to come through early this evening.

Its all gone for now. 24mm according to my digital rain gauge. The useful stats are 16mm/20mins and 20mm/30mins.
Hopefully we can catch a thunderstorm or two this afternoon/evening/tonight. The storm tracker is plotting heaps of lightning in the gulf and even some over Auckland? The odd fork of lightning visible, but no thunder.
Yes I would say Coromandel is going to get a lashing!

Its interesting though, it seems there is more rain here because of these sorts of events - where heavy rain slides across the east. Other examples are 29/30 March 2007 and 29 April 2008.

Been hearing ALOT of thunder down here north of Hamilton. been about 3 or 4 rumbles every minute for alot of the morning.Not to sure how much rain so far. Dont think we have had what you got there david.

EDIT: Since i wrote that there has only been one, so it has died off now. Between about 8:45-9:30 there was alot of thunder.

Judging by the rain radar it looks like there'll be quite a bit of thundery rain over the next 60 minutes between here and Te Aroha!

Dark and murky, 14.6C/14C and northeasterlies with thunder at the moment.

Yeah, some pretty intense (but brief) rain and lightning here this morn - just 12.6mm though.
I see Castle Rock in the Coromandel has recorded at least 42mm since 3am.

It's interesting looking at the Grey Lynn webcam, here the sky is just uniformly grey, the air is hazy, and the tree tops in the reserve up the hill from here are in mist. Wind is still NE here.

Yes, can see that gloom over Howick from here. Just thin cloud with patches of blue here and in the northern Gulf for most of the day with a very mild 17°C. Coromandel still shrouded though.

Next frontal band from the NW has just arrived now. Here we go again...
