Re: Wet Week for the South Island
Far out I am staggered how high the Avon is in the Central City today. Its damn near breaching into the streets two blocks from the town hall, I have never seen it so high. Shows how much water has fallen in the past few weeks here that 30mm in the CBD has had that sort of impact. I suspect also the head of the Avon being gorundwater fed is cranking up through the Waimakariri District rainfall
And it looks like further rain is imminient

Re: Wet Week for the South Island
Calm down and get your facts straight Mark. Parts of ChCh have had 50mm overnight. Jeffs station has 21mm since midnight on top of 13 before that last night for a total of 34mm.MarkThomas wrote:where is the rain for chch. 21mm thats it?!?!!? its stopped already
Any more significant rain in ChCh today is going to cause major issues

Re: Wet Week for the South Island
Just heard on NewsTalk ZB that Avon has breached its banks, SH1 is closed from Woodend to Blenheim, due to the state of the rivers and surface flooding, and schools throughout Nth Canty including Oxford and Rangiora are closed.

I also heard on the radio (RadioLive) that parts of Amberley and Leithfield were being evacuated? You alright up there, Tony?
EDIT: For those interested, here are the river flows for Canty:

Re: Wet Week for the South Island
I'm still here (!)
We live on the terrace so flooding around our house is not an issue, but there have been some slips on the terrace down to the road, and our neighbour's driveway is cut off by a 2m deep and 2m wide chasm carved by the floodwaters. Down on the low lying coastal part it looks 90% underwater, and I would guess that most of the evacuations are happening there.
I'll try to get to some pictures later on.

Re: Wet Week for the South Island
Looking at the ECan site in conjuction with forecasts of more rain to come, I fear there is a very nasty situation unfolding today for a great deal of folk. Stay safe out there everyone.
Steady Rain is back in ChCh now too

Re: Wet Week for the South Island
I don't believe the idiocy of SICON - the roads are swamped in water, the paddocks are covered, water flowing across our roads, and they have decided to grade our shingle road - right now!!! Have they nothing better to do?

28mm recorded on my station in the last two days... It's kicking back in now by the sounds of it.

Also, checking the Ecan wave buoy off Banks Peninsula, I see swells 6-8m peaking 10-12!

Re: Wet Week for the South Island
This is strongly reminiscent of some of the big easterly rains of the "past", which were comparatively uncommon in the Nino-favouring period of 1977-1997 or so.

Re: Wet Week for the South Island
Updated heavy rain warnings just issued. Metservice site working better today...one assumes its not stormy in Auckland then...
Looks to still be enough rain to come for us mainlanders to cause some dramas today. Light to moderate at the moment here in ChCh City
New warnings issued for Taranaki/ Central NI...
11.30am update: Rain has intensified again

Re: Wet Week for the South Island
Hi, am new to the forum but have browsed for a while now. Just thought I would share that I just went out to Rangiora and back from Christchurch, (was a bit worried I would get trapped out there) and the Waimak is looking pretty full along with the smaller river that runs beside Rangiora (the Ashley I think?), the paddocks look like one big lake and when I left was still very heavily raining!

Got sent a txt at 12:45 saying the Te Moana river by Geraldine has burst it's banks, this river also feeds into the Temuka river. Can't confirm this txt though

Re: Wet Week for the South Island
Yes i was very concerned when i drove past it at half 12 its bank to bank at the very top and high tide is at 3pm, its going to flood better get home me thinks.
Waimakariri isnt too bad although it is dirty and high that should be ok though.
If the river bursts it will be the first time i have seen it happen in kaiapoi.
Cheers
Jason.
