Auckland "gales" are not so cold. Currently 12C here, 5C is Cristchurch.

I notice the 3pm temp at Dunedin airport (93891) was 3.2C, southerly 22knots, sleety rain. And 11mm rainfall there this afternoon, which suggests a good snowfall over the Maungatua range down there.

Dunedin airport is 1m above sea level.

Michael, you havn't experienced the true rigour of the weather untill you have been in a South Island wintry southerly.

All the action is going up the coast around these parts,a mostly fine day here today with a cold southwesterly breeze.
Will be a snowy night around the tops of Banks Peninsula.

Yes, Deano, the 9pm radar shows very showery conditions just offshore with Banks Peninsula in the thick of it.

What I remember of a Christchurch winter is one day its 3 degrees in the daytime with wet drizzel then a boomer frost the next day then not a cloud in the sky but cold then the next mild overcast and dry without any wind and so on :P

Should be a good 'Old Man " southerly scenario until about Wednesday/Thursday when the next NW kicks in? :-w

very little wind here today, nice sunny day, makes you really appreciate nz, such a nice place to live!

the wind actualy finally dropped here at around 6am,....then the temperature started to drop, even as the sun came up...it took a while for the winter sun to counteract the loss of heat to space....
