Must've been localised shower activity around Chch about 6PM. I was inside then, but surely I would've noticed anything of significance. BTW some cloud has returned, but doesn't look like producing anything at present.

Not a cloud to be seen anywhere all day down here. You really are living in the wrong place I think, Michael! :-)

Very cold on the mountain overnight but we only got to -1.7° at 09:06 this morning in Omarama, and it's 5° there right now...still, at least it was a beautiful day, and I did get to laugh hysterically as I watched some kids skidding their bikes in the big ice patch behind the Caltex workshop! Very entertaining. Like the Icecapades, only without the boring dancing and stuff.

I notice today's radar showing a bit of shower activity out on the peninsula though.
Yes, Ben, I recorded a shower about 6pm with 0.3mm in my rain-gauge.
Interesting skies this afternoon. Looked quite thundery, which would impossible as we are under anticyclonic conditions at the moment.
Possibly an upper level trough scenario???

Today's anticyclonic thunderstorms in the North Island were possibly the same upper level trough that brought us the thundery looking skies here yesterday with a short shower, plus the shower activity off the coast.

Nice day here to with little to no wind, if anything it's a very lite NE. The sky is clear, apart from a little cloud offshore. There was a little bit more cloud about this morning. 8)

Nice day for a thunderstorm if the temp doesn't drop and the pressure lowers a bit which it is currently doing, oh.....and a southerly comes through. But I don't think I'm that lucky. Dew point would also have to up a bit (6.0 C at present). :P

The tropopasue looks to be at about 8500 / 9000m so it's high enough but things only look to be unstable (and that's only marginally unstable at that) to about 1500 / 2000m and above that it's all stable. Am I right Steven W! This is for here in Chch.

As far as people like me Chch has a better climate than Auckland as far as settled weather is concerned but its one of those 1 in 30 days type of day here today :D

That's a maritime climate for ya! But then the whole country has one of those I guess.

Auckland really does have the most damp and unsettled marine climate I've experienced.

Down here you hardly ever see those huge great Cb clouds floating by like some great fluffy white armada as you do most days up there.

Aaron, three conditions need to be met for a thunderstorm

1 Unstable lapse rate
2 Moisture
3 trigger(forcing)

Looking at todays conditions at Christchurch,

500hpa temp -25C. Thats a fair sign of potential unstable lapse rate.
Dewpoint 6C. Thats a good sign of stability. Too dry.
Trigger. There is't one.

That -25C 500hpa would be a strong indicator of thunder down your way in December. :)

The Tasman sea over the next day or so will be a good place for thunderstorm development. Upper air is quite cold(unstable lapse rate)
very moist air is moving in from subtropics, dewpoints 16C(moisture)
and an active frontal trough moving in (forcing).

In my opinion Auckland has one of the better climates in NZ. I base that on the following

Reliable rainfall (keeps the garden Green) :D
Very mild winters are the norm (I hate the frost) :x
Reasonable sunshine (over 2000hrs annually) \:D/

Auckland is a beautiful place in many ways. But the weather used to annoy me! It was hardly ever just one thing!

One minute rain, the next sun, with wind, then the wind would die down and it would start raining, or the sun would be out and beautiful and fine, then just as you're settling into the deck chair a cool breeze would blow in more rain! :-)

Come on! There's ALWAYS room for a good frost! What's life without icicles and snow?!

What we need is the southern alps 100k or so in the tasman off the westcoast to make the west and SW winds dry 8)

Yes, a mountain range to the southwest to stop the spring southwesterlies would have been good. But I like the rain.

Thanks Steven, it's good to get back to the basics. I figured the other day nothing was going to happen, I was trying to be technical, reading charts and stuff then putting my figures on the forum. :)

I'll remember those pointers! :D
