Unstable Tasman

Looks a bit thundery out there is the Tasman.

now where's my amphibious storm chase car!!!!

That does indeed Steven W. Thunderstorms look to be slowly pushing north up the west coast, although there looked to be an injection of thunderstorms about midday into the top part of the west coast (the Karamea Bight area of the west coast)

Quite warm outside despite it being winter, temp says about 12 to 13 C at the moment.....feels warm anyway.

i see met service are now "confidence good" of the north tasman low giving gales and heavy rain to the NI friday and saturday...typical, we are going to the bay of islands those days....

Re forecast subtropical low.

Certainly looks like there will be a good moisture feed into this trough.

Friday looks like being warm and humid in the North with some heavy rain about. This Evening is milder than of late, currently 14c.
I'm in Nelson this weekend. Nelson should be well protected from the showery Northwesterlies, I hope so.

They are very exposed to the north if theres a humid flow covering the tasman though

Drizzly early morning (as forecast) but cleared up for a while this afternoon in Chch, though with a chilly northeasterly.

They are very exposed to the north if theres a humid flow covering the tasman though

Nelson's supposed to get the heavy northerly rain tomorrow, and then the northwesterlies over the weekend. But I don't think northwesterlies in Nelson would be as warm as northwesterlies in Chch - here in Chch the winds don't have to cross a stretch of sea after they've passed over the mountains.

Nelson should be fine over the weekend as the flow will be NW but they should see a little rain with the Front on Sun night. Heavy rain likely there Friday sometime.
I'm flying down to Nelson on a small Aircraft Saturday so I'm hoping the Gales have moved on by then.
Possible snow to Low levels in the South next week. The High looks like it might be in a better position to deliver cold air to NZ mid week.

You can really see the nor west flow on the satilite!! and to note there is a nice wee storm north east of the phillipines (think thats how you spell it!)

Front due Sunday night could be interesting as it is likely to bring unstable air with it. Will be watching that one with interest.

Most of the country looks like getting some rain from tomorrow's front, but it should clear out of Auckland Saturday to give Eden Park fine conditions for the Rugby Saturday evening.

Even though MetService isn't suggesting it , I wouldn't rule out the possibility of snow in some inland South Island areas today, should the rain arrive from the north before temperatures get a chance to warm up.

the wind got up quickly here this morning,but now eased a bit, and the temperature dropped a bit, so a front has moved through, of sorts, with a bit of rain...

i am not sure that the wind is going to get as strong as they say in the auckland area today ( there is a storm warning in force for the hauraki gulf)...as the low is now already west of us, and is moving SE...

I was just thinking about the upcoming ski season. Any precipitation around the south island mountains is falling as snow, but with Ruapehu sheduled to open up soon, any sort of base that they've built up will be fast disspearing with the amount of rain forecast.

Ruapehu will be getting rain today at lower levels but fresh snow falls are likely from Sunday.
Overcaste and gloomy in Auckland today with continuous light to moderate rain blowing in on a fresh NE wind .

The other low centre to the north hopefully will stay there(same latitude) as it moves east giving us a mainly fine day in Ak preventing the SW
