TV Weather
I don't wish to dump on trained professionals or anything. I know they have great knowledge and do their best. But where does TV One collect its weather data?
The day's lowest high (?) was in Queenstown apparently, with 6°...that seems strange to me considering the Omarama weather station logged a high of 4.2° at 12:34 this afternoon and even that appears to have been an anomolous spike, as two glass thermometers at different places in town recorded a lower high (around 3.6°, give or take a degree).
There's also a professional-grade weather station about 1 km south of my station, owned and operated by AgResearch, at the Tara Hills Research Station. Why don't they ask them what the temperature was there? If Omarama recorded those temperatures, you can guarantee there was somebody elsewhere with an even lower daily high. How about Alexandra, Andy?
Yesterday they mentioned that the MacKenzie received a "light dusting" of snow on Friday, around 5 cm. I got 5" (which is what, 12.5 cm?) of snow here at the office and some of the farmers on more remote stations reported as much as 7-8"...that might be a light dusting in, say, Nebraska, but not in New Zealand as far as I'm aware. Mount Cook village got 40 cm of snow! The Lindis Pass was closed for almost 24 hours and the graders were out in force.
Besides this misreporting, the general weather picture they paint, including forecasts, almost never seems to bear out actual events as experienced by people not in airconditioned offices in Wellington. I'm not saying that they have to report the temperature and conditions from every single town in New Zealand, but surely they could at least TRY to get it right?
I'm not even going to waste my time watching television weather reports anymore. :-\

Yes, Gary, I gave up watching TV forecasts a while ago as the weather reports weren't very good, especially after jim hickey and augie auer left.
...and since the Internet has developed good information regarding weather, I rely on that for weather info.
I have noticed on the occasions I have watched the nightly weather reports there having been differences between the 2 channels regarding temperatures etc...
I get sick of the non-related weather news that you get on TV weather forecasts, ie. children patting ducks near an oyster farm near Nelson, when you know that there is a major thunderstorm outbreak near Auckland

The reporters love to make us Ak'ders jealous by showing in Nelson in a SW situation how nice it is there while we get windblown stratus and horizontal rain

What irritates me is when they have 'technical difficulties' and can't bring you the full display. OK these problems may often be out of their control, but on other occasions they should be able to sort it out before the weather comes on - eg why couldn't they think ahead and put new batteries in the presenter's remote.

I'm sure they'd be happy as hell to turf out the poor weather person and replace the whole segment with ads.tich wrote:What irritates me is when they have 'technical difficulties' and can't bring you the full display.
