Re: Unstable air to start the year?
Wind very strong over in Matangi in a NNW Direction.
Developing CB over atm that looks like heading south.
Might hit Tokoroa later on?
Excuse the quality taken on a cell phone camera:

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
Sky certainly seems active there and an updraft as well - just windy and cloudy down here - hardly seen the sun at all. Max Temp 22.8ºC and DP 18.9ºC, certainly getting up there... Cold front due in about 4hrs - guess... looking at sat pic and synoptic.

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
Yes what a hot nor'wester blowing through here!! Temperature has been on 27-28C since midday, and has peaked at 28.4C! Yesterday was far worse, we had 28.7C with 21C dewpoints as well
Each day this year so far has gotten over 28C.
The other station down the road has 28.0 for yesterday and 27.9 today, however it reported 30.6 on the 1st

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
Cu congestus forms now to the east of here over ChCh and other clouds seeming to trying their utmost to get organized. Wind still light from the South to SW but looks more north-easterlish over ChCh or the airport as aeroplanes are coming into land from the south. Some glaciation way to the SW as well.
Picking up very light sfericals now, possibly from down south?

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
I see some early signs that we may be in for a good summer anticyclone next week with some rather high daytime temperatures possible again

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
just had a downpour here as the heat sets off some pre frontal heavy showers in the Auckland area currently.
Re: Unstable air to start the year?
All models going for it I think. Looks like pushing in tomorrow, and lingering for the whole week, with occasional troughy incursions for the South Island. North of 40S though, looks like a superb week on the way.David wrote:I see some early signs that we may be in for a good summer anticyclone next week with some rather high daytime temperatures possible again
As for todays convection, certainly looks interesting in Canterbury and northern Otago. Looking forward to on the ground reports!

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
temperature did not get as hot here, as alot more cloud cover (front was closer), i.e oly 23.5C max
and alot less land heating (i.e wind comes more direct off the tasman sea from the NW here that for auckland city)
just had a heavy rain shower go through.....first line...

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
I see the M/S have updated their t/storm page to include severe t/storms southwest of CHCH (by the looks of their map)...could be up to 30mm hail?!?! Ouch...

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
Big drops of rain with the odd bit of hail where I am in Chch.
Not thunder/lightning here yet but more is getting recorded further south.

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
Heavy drops (some hail?) in central Chch a few minutes ago - heard a few distant rumbles. Could be interesting when I'm flying out of Chch and up to Akl later this afternoon.

Re: Unstable air to start the year?
TS going off near here for last 20 mins, seems to be more N and NW of Amberley, perhaps beyond Waipara. Some moderate rain here, thunder every 20 secs, but no lightening, too much cloud to the north.
