also, the heating on the land over the waikato int he afternoon would have helped to make the cb's more active by the time they got to the BOP..maybe...

I think the Waikato would've been lashed by frequent, squally showers and very strong cold southwesterlies on Tuesday - hardly the ingredients for ground heating.

There were some nice buildups during my lunch time walk - I sat on the end of Princes wharf for about half an hour enjoying the view.

probably true...but there were surprisingly good sunny periods between showers, and the sun up here in the NI still has some good warmth in it, even if it is the shortest day of the year...

Good shot Graeme. There was quite a few of those weak cb's around today. Quite a bit of rain in them too. I suggest daytime heating helped these to form.

Photo here of a distant cb on Tuesday morning. This cloud is forming south of Bombay(over Waikato) and produced a visable lightning strike not long after photo was taken.

Photos OK but I thought the sky was genarally rather boring.
Picture No 4 I saw driving home from work and I did think "I wonder if Aaron is taking a photo of that 'hail-swaith' which looked to be around the Aranui area. It looks like it on your photo line-up.

I just put photos up to give people a general idea on whats going on down here, I'd agree the sky wasn't that interesting. Those shallow Cb's looked like they were totally made up of tiny hail because they just seemed to disapate so fast.

I like the first photo apart from the industrilised looking buildings, a hail swathe in the background with a darkish base sneaking it's way toward me. Very low tops as you say Steven although one or two stirkes in Pegasus Bay (as in Cg according to the lightning map) were to be had the night before on the 22nd with a bit more sheet (according to myself as I saw the sheet lightning). Very sparse stuff and far away so not great to observe.
