If the pressure is that low, it would be called a TD or possibly a TC. (TD= Tropical Depression, TC= Tropical Cyclone)

Woops I meant basically a storm... just saying that is a very deep low indeed.
That certainly will make some huge swells in the tasman.

Is a near deep down south at 948hpa, not too sure what time from it was or what effects it will have, as Tornado Tim said above huge swells.

if its very far south, then its not in the tasman at all, and would most likely be a fairly run of the mill polar low. do you have a synoptic chart of the low, mark?

Oh it was on the Metservice 7 day rain forecast. It was right down to the SW of NZ but was never coming to hit New Zealand. I just mentioned it because thats the lowest number (947hpa) i have seen in the area the map shows and covers. Its only at 952hpa now.

Certainly looks like a formidable blocking high, with the right orientation to keep it warm and dry in the east (and constantly windy in Wellington).
As for the 947hPa low, that's probably either the GFS or the UK model running away with some rapid development, no guarantee it will come off.
And the swells with it, not necessarily. If it's moving that quickly then there won't be much fetch for big swells to develop in the Tasman.

Certainly a very permanent NW flow ahead which will push temperatures up in the east for quite a few days.
Just wondering myself if the low system by the weekend will push the high away abit, allowing some interesting weather :-) .
Cheers

I think that firstly the northeasterly for Christchurch tomorrow will be a bit of a nuisance. High temperatures probably somewhere between 18C and 22C. After that, you're in for a long run of either warm northeasterlies or hot northwesterlies!

Skies are clearing now from morning low cloud with just some high cloud about and NE tending North in some areas at times. Dont know that it will turn NW until tomorrow. Currently 26.5 degrees in my neck of the woods and climbing. Hopefully some extremes to come so i can keep watch on things as i need something to do due to having a torn spleen while scoring my first century in cricket on Saturday. I was in hospital for 2 nights and cant play for 6 weeks it sucks!! :| Anyhow some good hot, hot weather would cheer me up ;)

Its a very strange day here in Christchurch cause some stations are showing 29-30 degrees at present and others are showing around 24-25 degrees. Its still a NNE and a very light one at that. If turns NW temps will rise right above 30 with the heat of that sun and clear skies that we have today.

Lyttelton = 30.1

Sounds a bit excessive. Even the notorious heat trapping Dunedin Airport only got to 28C so far today.

Warm but not hot here today. Reaching 27 degrees with a freshening NE so thats stopping temps of 33 or 34 being achieved as they would if was NW. 32 in Ashburton at the moment! Blue skies forecasting 32 tomorrow for CHCH i dont see it happening with NE too prevaling it has to stay NW all day with clear skies.

Lyttleton = 32.6 Rolleston = 30 Sumner = 29 Oxford= 35.3! Swannanoa= 32.2 Rangiora = 30.
