Job Crisis!!

For those who have jobs at the moment hold onto them as i am finding it very hard to find jobs at the moment.
Being a part time student i am looking for some part time work to get some money coming in until April when i will have finished my travel and tourism course.
I have rung around alot of places trying to find work but alot of places are atcually cutting jobs this year with the economy the way it is, so i have got myself into a pit hole really.
The course aims at placing you in a job after the course has finished in the industry with a 90% sucess rate, but at the end of last year they only managed to get a few people into jobs.
Tourism is still growing across New Zealand but with job losses going out the window at the moment its abit gloomy.
I have actually realised that what i need to do is a DOC course in Motueka, as i would like to become a Tour Guide or hut ranger for the Abel Tasman national park.
Probally not a very rellavent topic but if anyone has any thoughts or comments feel free to post away.

Yeah I know what you mean, I have all summer off until uni starts in March and have applied for jobs but never heard back from anyone. Am gonna apply again, but it's been a real disappointment for me because both Foodtown and Countdown (applied at both) are 10mins walk from my house.

I was made redundant from my job is australia and my part time job (i had 2 jobs really) did not get the cantract for the job in new castle it was aiming for so i was out of work. Thats why i came home early.

Here i applied for a job on student job search today and was ment to get a call back today but got nothing. So not sure about that.
Milking, well the payout has been slashed so less holidays for farmers means less relief milkings i can potentially do.
At least i have my class 2 and F endorsment which opens alot of doors.

Mmm that's a tough one Jason... personally i'd stay away from DOC - who knows what the government will cut funding to at the next budget, when they're seeing red in the books. I've heard DOC workers are on or near minimum wage, so perhaps something to consider.

The mining industry here has gone from boom to bust in a matter of months practically. Practically every country now is really feeling it, Iceland has already gone bankrupt... and on the verge of it are the United Kingdom, Greece and Latvia to name a few.

This could easily be a 10 year depression I think... the ride is going to get very bumpy so hold on!

Sorry Foggy but it is not a consideration for a potential Ranger. Working for the DoC is usually a passion, a lifestyle which has no price. You could pay me 50$/h as a tech or 12$/h as a Ranger that I wouldn't hesitate. Obviously, without family nor wife nor kid(s) it's quite easy for me to say such thing and not consider the money ...

Like Jason, I am about to apply for the course in Nelson (and not Motueka) to become a DoC Ranger. So I can just say : If it's really what you want to do, go for it Jason !
I'm in the same situation, lost my job in november, hardly any opportunities lately as a tech and therefore have to work for a New World in town filling up shelves.
Jasin, f you want some info, don't hesitate to MP me as I've been gathering hints and tips around for 2 months now.

Actually to be a DOC hut ranger in the Abel Tasman National Park from what I have heard isnt bad pay.
The area is growing very fast for tourism and people visiting, with the facilities available becoming more expansive.
I know when i was up in Kaiteriteri in February of last year there was atleast 35 different kayak hire or days training outlets and atleast 20 different boat charters for the area.
But yes it certainly doesnt matter by any means about money during this crisis, the best thing you could do is something you are geniunely interested it and enjoy than some piss pore cover up job just because you need the money.
I possibly wont be up there until 2010 some time as ive got to start saving up again so i can afford to stay up there and study etc.
Good thing is atleast up there from November-early January its fruit picking season where you can earn up to $20.00 an hour , not sure if thats what it is now though.

The problem is that you have to work for the DoC during summer months if you attend the ranger training in Nelson. You're paid for it obviously but you can't negotiate the rate (13,5$/h).

Give it another year and things will start to pick up again in my opinion. It will be a very slow recovery though and the next boom is possibly 5 years away. I think the safest jobs are the public service jobs as the government won't want to axe these and worsen unemployment rates.

I've just moved to a job in the public sector. The reason for the job security and better pay than I was on. In 'tough' times the government doesnt want to add to the unemployment so I dont see huge job cuts in the near future. They just wont be increasing the number of people in the public sector I wouldnt think for the next few years.

I don't think we've seen the full effect here yet.

I work as a permanent casual employee of a small firm contracted to a DHB. Like a contractor I am reliant on work being available.

Fingers crossed as our work is largely government based we will be ok, but that doesn't stop me being nervous about it.

I think the next 6 months will tell the story.

Australia is suffering at this point as the first wave of redundancies and mine closures take effect (6000 onto the dole in 1 day). The spin on effects are yet to be seen and I doubt they will be the only ones laid off.

I our think our large cities, Christchurch,Welington and Auckland are the best place to be as they have a large economy, smaller one industry towns like Queenstown must be at great risk.

People like me (2 years ago) are being/have been pushed out of IT employment, and yet they have the cheek to say they're short of skilled staff. Meanwhile there are plenty of drones holding on to their jobs in IT.
