Thanks Brian. 03stormchaser (aka Stephen Burrows) informed me about this as it was apparently in THE PRESS but I hadn't seen any pictures of it, I downloaded the video and had a look. It looks OK, slowish in it's movements. Something similar to the 27th October 2002 tornado near Chch, had that been near houses there would've been some damage!

Just got off the phone with my Dad's business partner in the States (he just moved there and lives there now) and he said they had a tornado touch down only about 5 minutes from them (walk, in the car, not sure? - 5 min away anyway) the other day and the've been getting constant thunderstorms which he says are amazing! The thunder is the loudest he's ever heard. He lives near to tornado ally I believe, Nashville (Tenesse? Something like that). And apart from the tornado just mentioned the've been getting other ones, he said the weekend just past or the weekend before there were 15 touchdowns in their area (I'm not sure how to define their area, never the less 'their area' anyway). He said sirens go off and the town gets allerted.
I said "Did you see any!", he said "I wouldn't want to!"
Sounds like exciting stuff!!!

Aaron and I have discussed the idea as well, I have thought about going on one of those stormchasing groups they have in the US, in theory they would have a better likely hood of seeing some thing just because the tour guides would no local conditions (well you would hope so!!), but planning one your self gives you that extra freedom to travel were you like and possible take that extra 'risk'!!
But for me the likely hood of going on such a trip would be 2 years plus away, because there is no point in doin a trip on the bear minium, you want to stay as long as possible and enjoy the full thrill of a stormchase!!!

Hmmmmm???
........... Something to think about.
In terms of accommodation, more people means things become a bit more affordable, (I guess?). So more than 1 person would be better. Does anyone have any idea on realistic prices for going on such a trip? Per person? A return flight ex Auck? And what would be a good length of time to stay over there?
Just getting ruff ideas at present, it's still a year away but if the flight is pre booked earlier it can keep costs down I believe. I'm not sure about this year but you never know, I haven't looked at any figures so I'm not sure.

Qantas were offering AKL/Dallas return for around $2000 earlier this year.Does anyone have any idea on realistic prices for going on such a trip?
Thats a special though, normally upto $2,500.
Rental vehicles aren't expensive, but the fuel costs can add up. Accomadation wouldn't exactly be 5 Star, so this cost shouldn't be too big either.
I will look more closely at cost early next year.

Can you pencil me in as another possible.
...What about the Aussie storm season? Closer means more affordable = longer stay?
I'm sure we could entice a couple of the guys on the AusWX list to join in as guides

Just need to stay in Auckland You get as much storms here as anywhere else in the world without the heat and humidity bar tornados and "real hurricanes"

Thanks Steven for those figuers, I could've just about gone over there tomorrow had I not just bought my AMD 64 3000 computer system for video editing!!!!!
But yeah, that sounds not to bad now (I was thinking something much higher). Pencil me in like Pete.
Obviously there will be a day when the decision has to be made, are you going or not, so at the moment I've still got time to ponder.
As Pete says though, an aussie storm chase wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe this is going to far but it could be possible to do both? With pacific blue and freedom air things have gone down in price lately so it might be possible.
As for the video editing system. I hope to do some some cool stuff with that machine!!

I thnk the only problem with going to oz would be if you planned a date and went then while your over there nothing happened it wouldnt be all that fun!! while in the US if you pick your dates wisely the odds of nothing happening are very slim!
But having said that i would be very keen to storm chase in OZ

Unless you know someone in the aviation business the airfare would be steep
