Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
you should be saying Whenuapai's hottest day on record
other locations around auckland have had hotter days than today (i.e 31C)

But auckland is rather large so its not fair to claim Auckland had its hottest day in 137 years. But Whenuapai and parts of auckland did.

Is drier air mixing out ahead of what is a slow moving front, and undercutting the warmer moister airmass that was over us, and providing the lifting mechanism for the current set of clouds streaming in from the northwest?Manukau heads observer wrote:DP is alot lower in the NW air stream ahead of the approaching front...only 17DP here now...interesting...

Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
I knew this would cause a debate! Depends on how you describe "Auckland"... can Auckland only say it has it's hottest summer ever if ALL weather stations in the Auckland region break a record?? Our site explains it was West Auckland and says where it was recorded and what it was compared to.

Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
Look at debates as a good thing. there is nothing wrong with a debate.
All im saying is that, for example, people in south auckland that see hotest day in how ever long might scratch their heads and say huh, it wasnt even as hot as yesturday. Its just because Auckland is a provance and a city that this is a debate. Maybe say West auckland had its hottest day. If a place like Morronsville had its hottest day you wouldnt say Hamilton did. Same thing applies in auckland. Just because its all urban doesnt mean its one place.
just my view... please dont see this as an attack.
EDIT: sorry just saw your site Phill. Explains it all well. cheers

Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
If NIWA is saying its the hottest official temp in Auckland in over 100 years then it must be. All suburbs vary somewhat for different reasons. Some parts of the city have slightly greater wind speeds than others, clearer skies than other deciding factors. Its like saying last week Christchurch's 34 degrees was the official temperature but the weather station down the road from me got to 36.7 degrees. The official station that takes the recording had the greatest reading for Auckland that it has before. There is always going to be variations around the city but we cant say 6 different temperatures for one city.

Guys, your thread hijaking!
There's an appropriate topic for you chat about this.
It has nothing to do with how wet the weather is..
Sorry to burst a bubble but.. please make another topic if you want to discuss it further.

j-me-h, I said 'debate' with a smile! I know what you mean
West Auckland is part of Auckland...so in theory it's Auckland. But we've been told off for talking about this here!!!
Rain clouds moving in (to keep me in this thread!)...should arrive tonight in Auckland...can't wait for the southerly! (Never thought Id say that!).

Back to talking about the rain. It's getting darker by the minute. Hopefully the rain brings a change to cooler air!

Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
interestingly Ricky's station has got warmer in the last hour with the NNW wind change, peaking at 29..2C and an easing of the DP...as the pre frontal clouds move over...
the front has fragmented a bit....
looking black out to my west!
the current warm temperatures around the auckland area at 6:30pm must be some sort of record maybe for the time of day?

Still NE here, 27C/DP 22C. Not looking like even 20m m from that front now.

Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
Auckland regions hottest recorded temperature is 33.1C and occurred at Henderson feb 3 1998. And on that particular day most of the Auckland metropolitan area topped 30C. Owairaka recorded 30.5C, Ardmore Airfield 31C .....

Frontal band on radar looks like it's starting to make a move towards the NE now - approaching Auckland much more quickly

Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
interestingly the DP has increased to 20 again with the onset of the rain
temperature dropped to 22.5C now with the rain .....
i.e there was a dry slot in front of the front....
I see wellington has done well for rain total....65mm or so....lucky them!

Interesting - 72% was our lowest humidity this afternoon and been very slowly increasing since 2:40pm. Wind is still NE here so not sure what's happening there.Manukau heads observer wrote:interestingly the DP has increased to 20 again with the onset of the rain

Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
lovely thick rain here (drops close together)
may it continue! (because not much is going to give us rain after this system goes through for another week or so!)

Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
Latest radar (7pm) looks like the front is "running out of gas" so to speak - maybe a short sharp period of rain or a few heavy showers, but doesn't look like a major rainfall, at least here in Auckland

Re: Wet weather starting 9th February
Heavy rain here with the wind begining to get up there. Gusting over 50km/h
EDIT: now gusting to 65 and still building. Rather heavy rain too. Being pelted down by the wind. Comming down in sheets of rain
