Unstable trough
Trough due across the country Wednesday looks cold and unstable.
Thunder/hail likely in western areas. Also, slight chance of thunder along eastern coasts with southerly change.

By Western areas, does that include the western parts of the North Island?, I guess we'll find out tomorrow. I see great pictures in the near future!

Probably just grey stratus as the colder air moves in, unfortunately

Yes, thunder likely over the west of the NI today. Infact, looks like a Tstorm over Taranaki this morning. Foggy in Auckland at the moment.By Western areas, does that include the western parts of the North Island?,
Snow level in Southland/Otago today looks like it could be as low as 300m, much of it nearer the coast though.

Some interesting looking mammatus cloud to the north after about 4PM. It seems the cloud is thickening from the north, while I have been looking south, wondering when is the southerly front coming? The southerly has obviously arrived, but, as is usual in Chch, the rain hasn't. In a southerly rain normally comes later than the wind change, if at all. But it certainly feels colder - about 8C.Just a boring old cloudy day, mid-range cloud that is, no southerlies although their were a couple of puffs from that direction around and from 2pm.
MetService seems to keep changing the snow levels in today's forecasts. The short forecasts forecast snow to about 900 metres in the eastern NI and 600 metres in Canterbury. But the National Radio midday long-range predicted snow by tomorrow for the Rimutaka Road (highest point about 550 metres asl) and Napier-Taupo Highway (about 800 metres at summit), while forecasting snow down to 700 metres on the Kaikouras.

A very active thunderstorm reported from home, but I was unable to get out of the office early - so no pictures from me
On the drive home there was a very large anvil at the southern end of a line of storms heading off to the north east. There are a couple of anvils around to the north-west of me here, just waiting for the 6pm satelite image to see if there are any more.
Cheers,
G
