Yes I remember that storm - didn't really affect me where I was at the time (Rotorua - relatively sheltered from southerly storms), but I recall hearing that the Cook Strait Ferries couldn't sail for a few days, and Wellington got hammered by severe gales.

In my book it was a turmulchorus sp year from the end of May to August after a benign autumn that year ;)
