This cell developed to the south of Auckland early afternoon. I reckon this cb was about 50km distant with top around 10,000m. The light was poor and the subject caught on zoom, hence quality not great.

My photos above were taken at 12.30pm. The cell developed next to an existing storm. Midday radar placed that storm west of Hamilton. Hence, the cb photographed is more like 80km away from my position.

With 500hpa(5000m) temp down to -25C, a chilly atmosphere, so large hail a certainty from such a congesting cloud. And I'm sure there would have been hail over Auckland today. Alot of lightning activity indicating some strong cb's about. Anyway, I took this snap of the Ak storm about 2.30pmish.
a short burst of hail (~6mm hailstones) observed here in grey lynn about 2:12 pm followed by brief heavy rain, all coincident with quite a lot of i-c lightning

yeah, same here Phil.
When the southerly went through Christchurch, the wind chill factor was that severe, that I had to put 2 wooly hats on, plus an extra jersey underneath the sou-wester I had on.My feet became that cold that when I took my shoes off, I had to put them, IN THE FIRE, to actually warm them up.
Never the less,I was able to keek warm despite the atrocious conditions outside. If the power went off, thank goodness, I have the AGA cokker to keep me warm
Good to see film being used! Despite my digital camera being great I'd like to get some slide film and have a go at what I can get next time a thunderstorm comes round these parts, might be a while?
But then again there was thunderstorms, 2cm hail and a funnel cloud on 22nd of August 1999 here in Chch and that's 46 days away!! (only 6 weeks and 6 days - for the year 2004 of course), not that far away
Here's a better photo of that mountain range. Still, a bit hazy due to the morning conditions and quality suffers slightly due to it being taken on full zoom.

Must be an upper cold pool or something brushing the east coast of the South Island. Some wispery tops up above Chch now, there maybe some shallow Cb's about, no lightning but there could be a few small hail showers out on the peninsula. I think it's going to move offshore soon.
Just taken some pics, shows wispery tops etc above and another one of the Alps below. In the Alps one there looks to be an invasion of huge blow flies near the left hand side of the picture.

I saw that satpic today. It looks like a band of thunderstorms moving over Christchurch. Not likely as pressures were too high, although the cirrus did look quite impressive.

Nothing on the Noon and 3PM radars. Looked interesting though.
Yeah, looks as if nothing happened anywhere. Had the surface temp been up a bit more things could've happened, the dewpoint would've also needed to be much higher (1C today) so there was no chance of anything happening.
