Good rain in Chch

Unread post by Thunder »

Some good rain has arrived here in the past 10 or so minutes, still going strong at 11:40pm, Southshore of course. Will be looking at the midnight radar with interest. Dewpoint still at it's high of today at 9 degrees, temps only slightly gone down at 10. Wind was NE / E most of the day but has gone E / SE recently, maybe the wind change has promted this rain?

I just thought, "Bahh! I'll start another thread!" and so I have. :D

Cheers Burrows!

Thanks very much, ah yes... some good rain in there indeed. Still going strong here but has calmed down slightly. It did that before but I'm sure it'll come back again.

Off to bed for me to, it's been one of my more productive nights posting :)

Well the rain is as heavy as ever this morning with it still pelting down, my rain guage said 34mm for last night, wounder what it'll be when I get home? :D

Depoint and temp went to 10 at 3am last night! The dewpoint is now (as at 9am) at 8 and the temp 9 so not much change. Baro at 991 hpa. The wind keeps alternating between NE / E and S / SE / SW, it's an easterly / Southerly battel. I like Tony's map for the midnight prognosis with a low nearly right on top of us, just out to the east a bit. Probably won't mean much though this time of year, would be good to have in summer.

Steady rain continuing this morning - in fact MetService has now issued a heavy rain warning for Canterbury, with up to 70-90mm possible in the foothills today. Warm advection snow is also predicted in the high country above about 500 metres. I think the area needs a good dose of rain, as the last 2 months have been quite a bit drier than normal here. I doubt whether this event will be Canterbury's turn after eastern BOP and Manawatu, though expect some minor flooding and slips.

Thats nice drop of rain up there

Some light rain / drizzel fell this morning, after a frost last night leaving the roads abit icey. Don't know at what level the snow fell as it is still very misty here.

Still cool temp now is 3.6. Pressure at 994mb. Rainfall since 6pm yesterday 5mm. Most rain since 22 of June, as July as very dry.

Still raining steadily in Chch, but I've yet to hear of any weather related problems resulting from the rain, apart from the slip on the highway north of Kaikoura.

Still raining here to Ben, Sydenham.

It calmed a little before though, overall you can see the rain has detensified since the initiall falls after midnight last night. Jeff's graphs explain it well:

According to midday obs, considerably less rain has fallen on outer Banks Peninsula than in Chch - in 24 hours, we've had 55mm (wherever they take the Met VUW obs), while Le Bons Bay has only had 15mm.

Rain has eased to mostly drizzle from about midafternoon, though still dull. It'll be interesting to see to how inland Canterbury and further south have fared with today's rain system.

LOL Micheal!

I got 50mm in my rain gauge, to be exact it's 48mm, I can round can't I? :D

Here's a pic I took at eastgate mall showing the Port Hills with cloud hugging it, I proped it on a concret barrier and held the camera still for 8 seconds, I think I should've done it for 5 seconds or closed the iris a bit more due to those bright lights in the foreground.

Yeah, but how often is it below 10C when raining in Auckland? Chch rain generally occurs when the wind is between south and northeast, ie onshore, which is usually cold this time of year. We often get weather patterns whereby the airflow is from other directions (though often with a surface northeasterly), and consequently little rain for long periods at a time. Then the pattern changes to more onshore flows, with longer spells of showers or drizzle, and occasionally more persistent rain.

Still mostly overcast with the occasional outburst of light rain or drizzle. Weak sunshine made a brief appearance earlier in the afternoon, but the forecast clearance hasn't eventuated yet.

Last shower in central Chch was a few hours ago. Only partly cloudy since - maybe this is finally the forecast clearance (but I wouldn't count on it).

Another light shower has arrived.
