My two memorable ones are:
Kaimai's, Wed 14th Jan
and
Bay of Plenty storms, Tue 12th May
Remember there are a lot of contributions to the stories in there, don't just look at the post's I linked to
Ohh, not forgetting the long lasting waterspout on 20th May.

I agree that big hailstorm/waterspout event was the top event.
For here I would say the best for 2009 was that awesome thunderstorm in winter, or the 50mm in 2 hours earlier this month.

Severe thunderstorms on the 18th January 2009 which lead to our chase with a funnel cloud and lots of good storm activity around.
Thunderstorm on the 3rd of Januaru 2009 was also a goody.

I was going to mention the January thunderstorms for down here but you bet me to it, Jase.Jasestorm wrote:Severe thunderstorms on the 18th January 2009 which lead to our chase with a funnel cloud and lots of good storm activity around.

...otherwise, i don't think there were any other major weather events, the lack of snow to low levels could be noted?
I'll have to check my diary for any other significant events.

The Bay of Plenty hail storm back in May is the stand out for the year, would even be an okay storm in the US mid West, pity I was at Mt Cook playing in the snow at the time

Re: Top NZ weather events of 2009
For me and Dunedin the snow of the 16th of June was pretty remarkable, but the NE gales of the 8th of June have stuck in my mind and I've thought about them often with a shudder. It was like the weather had got stuck in it's worst gear. The temperature sat at 7 degrees for 12 hours, and the gales went all that day and all that night, and all the heaters in the house and the fire couldn't keep the chill out.

In Christchurch I liked the the 2 January storms, also seeing the photo of the waterspout in Sumner.
As for the rest of the year, it hasn't been bad, just nothing too exciting here.
For me the best thing this year in NZ would be seeing the BoP hailstorm/ waterspout videos and images.
To a better 2010 weather wise.

Auckland has not had too much but there were at least 3 very good nocturnal lightning events in the winter/spring.

Not a lot to happened really in the area, had bugger all snow, the only event that comes to mind was in May when a West Coast storm spillover sent sleet lightning out over our area, putting on a two hour light show in the middle of the night.

Tornado at Ramarama, South Auckland, September 28th..Auckland has not had too much but there were at least 3 very good nocturnal lightning events in the winter/spring.
Only really make the news when they damage property, Kaitaia also had a damaging Tornado July 4th.

Re: Top NZ weather events of 2009
The severe thunderstorm near the coromandel that was sparking at an astounding rate, on an otherwise completely clear evening/night - the conditions also spawned a line of thunderstorms above the hauraki gulf. I think it was in Janurary? It was where I first met NZStorm and spwill as well. The severe storm persisted from around 4pm near Taupo, till almost 9am the next morning, well NE of Northland. Most amazing thunderstorm event Ive ever seen in New Zealand.

Re: Top NZ weather events of 2009
Nothing much happend here this year very little snow. The only thing i can think of is the floods we had in feb with close to 75mm in town and 100mm plus in the hills causing the river to almost blows its banks in places. We had 148mm in feb about 3 to 4 times more than normal.

Erm, another memorable weather event pick for me would be the most recent Canterbury Thunderstorms... amazing!!

I'd say the thunderstorms of January were quite eventful but there was nothing much else this year.
Lots of uneventful weather here could be the 'highlight'?
