Re: General January Weather
Went for a cycle out near Templeton/West Melton way this evening, great ride aside from the bloody wind.
Here are some pics I took. There was a very cool effect happening over the airport, they almost look like spotlights but definitely weren't, look like just rays from the sun. Can anyone shed more light on this?

The rays are anticrepuscular rays. These will be radiating up from the E horizon, opposite the setting sun.

Nice atmospheric optics Weetbicks and aside from the wind I'm glad your enjoyed your cycle this evening... erm... those there beams *grins* look like Anticrepusular rays to me - I am thinking perhaps you took those gorgeous pics in the opposite direction of the setting sun (?) - anyway, someone else might know.Weetbicks wrote:Went for a cycle out near Templeton/West Melton way this evening, great ride aside from the bloody wind

Cool, will have to google it. Yes you are quite right those are looking eastward toward the airport and were opposite the setting sun.

You can see the big cb's on the sat pic heading for Southland this morn. Dunedin is looking a good spot for late afternoon thunder/hail with an onshore easterly forecast which will provide the convergence.

Sooo.. where's our Dunedin crew? Janos? It's actually looking quite unstable here, but we're not going to get the change we need, dammit!NZstorm wrote:You can see the big cb's on the sat pic heading for Southland this morn. As promised some pics from the Copland Valley during last mondays event.Razor wrote:Well I'm fresh back from a tramp in South Westland up to the Welcome Flat hotpools where I watched over 300mm of rain fall in two rain events over 36 hours, with a glorious sunny day in between the two events.
On the night of the first we got 141mm at the hut in about 4 or 5 hours with thunder and lightning. Cleared to a magnificent sunny day on the second from around 10am, then on Sunday the 3rd torrential rain set in at 7am and by 4pm it eased to showers, having dumped an incredible 188mm in just 9 hours into the hut rain gauge.
I will try and post some photo's etc later on
Cleared yesterday to allow us to walk out to the highway. I note in the paper that Franz Josef reported 250mm in just 12 hours! Quite a lot of damage on the highway

Re: General January Weather
I tried uploading a wee movie clip too but can't seem to get it to work. Under 1MB but too big for site limits?
And I see with another 300mm overnight the Cropp River site has topped 1000mm in the past 6 days
Wow thats some start to the year!

Morning, thanks for those pics, incredible, what a massive volume of water and those mountains are just overflowing... could do with some of that water in the dry FN and MN regions, thanks again.Razor wrote: As promised some pics from the Copland Valley during last mondays event.

Re: General January Weather
Have been spending time up Northland way, a very dry landscape up there. It is often dry over Northland through summer (after Xmas) but the current dry weather started back in October. Very nice beach weather but no surf due to the Westerlies/lack of tropical lows to the north and not the usual humid weather.

Re: General January Weather
The Cropp gauge now upto 400mm for the day and last hour 47mm. The Hokitika River is now running at over 6000 cumecs, which is where the flood warnings sound.
Thats nearly 1200mm and counting in 6 days!
Massive, follow that stats here: http://www.wcrc.govt.nz/river_level_rai ... ummary.htm
